It was then revised and published in book form in 1853.Cranford is partly based on Knutsford the town in which Gaskell grew up. It is inspired by rural town life of class snobbery. Gaskell fictionalizes her childhood observations to understand the role of class within society. The second impression of this edition. Publisher's note: The first impression of this edition of Cranford was published in 1940 but most of it was destroyed by enemy fire during the Blitz. This is the second impression of that edition. Accompanied by 23 wood engraving by Joan Hassall. It includes twenty vignettes and three plates. Bound in the original cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally smart. Slight loss to the head tail and front corners of the dust wrapper. Edge wear to the flyleaf. The boards are bright and clean. Internally firmly bound. This copy has been beautifully custom-bound by ZAEHNSDORF in full leather with seven raised bands and gilt decorations on the spine marbled end papers gilt page edges on all sides of the text block gilt decorations along the outer edges of the inside covers and a gilt border on the front and back covers.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Clean covers and spine. There are a couple tiny chips to the leather at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned and clean with no notable issues found. The book has been beautifully re-bound by Zaehnsdorf. Bright gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.</p> Macmillan and Co. hardcover
