Cranford was serialized in Household Words by Dickens. Besides known for her books Cranford and North and South she also wrote the biography of her friend Charlotte Bronte along with several other works. A very nice copy bound by E.P. Dutton in 3/4 blue crushed morocco over marbled paper covered boards raised bands gilt compartments decorated in red floral gilt onlays top edge gilt original gilt decorated cloth covers bound in at rear just a bit of fading to spine. Internally clean front endpapers slightly browned but the text block remains otherwise in excellent clean condition. Very good. With a Preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. This 'New Edition' is the first with all Thomson�s pen and ink illustrations printed with partial colour-tinting MacMillan first published an edition with Thomson's uncoloured pen and ink illustrations in 1891 and the 1898 edition had previously included 40 of the illustrations printed in colour. Imprint to verso of title page reads: 'Reprinted with Coloured Illustrations October 1898. New Edition 1907.' This is also the first edition to feature the binding design by A.A.
