Die Hals-Nasen-Ohrenheilkunde konnte sich erst so spät zu einem eigenen Fach entwickeln da die zu beobachtenden und zu behandelnden Organe in tiefen dunklen Körperhöhlen liegen; die dem bloßen menschlichen Auge nicht sichtbar sind. So bedurfte es erst der Erfindung eines perforierten Hohlspiegels durch Friedrich Hoffmann 1841 mit dessen Hilfe die Beleuchtung dieser Organe möglich wurde. Friedrich Hofmann 1806-1886 Arzt Geheimer Sanitätsrat in Burgsteinfurt beschreibt seinen perforierten Hohlspiegel der die Beleuchtungstechnik vor allem im HNO- und Augen-Bereich revolutioniert aber auch bei der Urethroskopie verwendet wird HAKEN GRÜNFELD. Die Erfindung war einfach er kratzte den spiegelnden Belag im Zentrum eines runden Toilettenspiegels ab und benutzte dieses Loch als Durchblick Die Bedeutung dieser Entdeckung wurde zuerst nicht erkannt und 1859 beschrieb v. Tröltsch den sogenannten Ohrenspiegel erneut. Seit dieser Zeit erfuhr er eine weite Verbreitung. -cf. Hoffmann let the toy figures which he had bought probably for his children during a trip to Nuremberg now coming to life in a fabulous way. -Heinrich Hoffmann 1809-1894 was a physician and treated patients suffering from pancreatic cancer. In Frankfurt he had a new clinic for psychiatry in which the patients were not blocked off but treated a tremendous novelty for that time. Handsome copy in green part wrappers to which we add the general cover. The whole is presented in a half blue long-grain morocco chemise spine with four raised bands set with gilt garlands enriched with red mosaic morocco pieces spine also decorated with gilt quadruple compartments embellished with red mosaic morocco pieces gilt date at foot marbled paper boards pebbled paper endpapers and pastedowns slipcase with blue morocco borders marbled paper boards pebbled paper interior signed G. Mercier and dated 1923. Three bookplates pasted on the pastedown including that of Maurice Robert. One joint of the chemise and slipcase slightly rubbed at foot small marginal tears on some green covers. Uncanny tales First edition in English rare in commerce of this selection of 12 tales from the author of "the high point of the German Romantic Movement" Bleiler. The stories include "The Cooper of Nuremberg" which may have been a source for Wagner's Die Meistersinger and the horror story "Coppelius the Sandman" which was referenced heavily by Freud in his 1919 essay "The Uncanny". Hoffmann 1776-1822 was also known for his musical works including the opera Undine 1816 and for the 1816 story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" which is the basis for the ballet The Nutcracker. He is often credited as E. T. A. Hoffmann with the A standing for Amadeus in honour of Mozart. Octavo. Original brown cloth spine lettered in gilt covers stamped in blind edges untrimmed blind stamp of W. Ulman Boston. Light wear bookplate small ink signature to the title page a little foxed but withal near fine amazing condition for any book this vintage especially this one. A rare book even when it’s rebound and this is the only copy I have ever seen of it in its original fragile binding in any condition anywhere best copy in the world so far. Following 30 years of gothic novels with logical not paranormal explanations at the end Matthew Lewis added the supernatural in his 1795 novel The Monk but it was Hoffmann in The Devil’s Elixirs “Die Elixiere des Teufels†Berlin 1815 who took supernatural horror out of the Gothic castle and on to the highway rearranging and expanding the potential plotlines and leaving a legacy vitally alive today for his descendants Bram Stoker H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. He elevates the sport to a new zenith as he analyzes the destructive psychological state the deeply divided nature of human imagination and the seductive ambiguities of art. The Capuchin monk Medardus is a charismatic criminal whose superficial holiness is a facade masking an inner wickedness. Traveling on the road to Rome and wrestling with the enigma of his own identity 65 years before Freud he is pursued by a demonic and murderous doppelganger multiple identity as a wraith of himself. The monk’s only potential salvation lies with the sex object Aurelie but to escape the curse which lies over him and his family he must evade sinister powers of the living and the dead.
