18241140Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & T. Cadell 1824. First Edition. 2 vols. in one. First in English. Original blue cloth backed boards and printed paper spine label. Light wear bookplate small ink signature to the title page a little foxed but withal near fine amazing condition for any book this vintage especially this one. A rare book even when it’s rebound and this is the only copy I have ever seen of it in its original fragile binding in any condition anywhere best copy in the world so far. Coll: 12mo. viii 379; 4 339 pages. Following 30 years of gothic novels with logical not paranormal explanations at the end Matthew Lewis added the supernatural in his 1795 novel The Monk but it was Hoffmann in The Devil’s Elixirs “Die Elixiere des Teufels†Berlin 1815 who took supernatural horror out of the Gothic castle and on to the highway rearranging and expanding the potential plotlines and leaving a legacy vitally alive today for his descendants Bram Stoker H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. He elevates the sport to a new zenith as he analyzes the destructive psychological state the deeply divided nature of human imagination and the seductive ambiguities of art. The Capuchin monk Medardus is a charismatic criminal whose superficial holiness is a facade masking an inner wickedness. Driven by power fantasies Medardus drinks an arcane liquor 60 years before Stevenson’s Jekyll & and Hyde and becomes implicated in a mystery against his will. Traveling on the road to Rome and wrestling with the enigma of his own identity 65 years before Freud he is pursued by a demonic and murderous doppelganger multiple identity as a wraith of himself. The monk’s only potential salvation lies with the sex object Aurelie but to escape the curse which lies over him and his family he must evade sinister powers of the living and the dead. Does he do it Nope. William Blackwood & T. Cadell unknown

192215058AB1922. Vienna Wiener Werkstätte ca. 1922. 9 : 175 cm. Black goadskin with gold embossment three-line gold stamp Wiener Werkstätte. This wallet was produced by the Wiener Werkstätte after a design by architect and designer Josef Hoffmann 18701956 between 1910 and 1928. It was the express wish of the founders of this institution that its range of products should encompass as many areas of life as possible. This is the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Consequently the Wiener Werkstätte premises in Neustiftgasse 3234 also accommodated a leather workshop. This rectangular object is made of black leather and features a geometric decorative pattern in precious gold embossing. Together with the fine leather these gold ornaments provide the object with its thoroughly elegant and exquisite character as the Wiener Werkstätte designers devoted to even the smallest object the same attention as to larger ones. - One of the famous wallets designed by Josef Hoffmann made for the Wiener Werkstätte. hardcover

This work examines Judaism Islam Samaritanism as well as Chinese Hindu and Mongolian beliefs uniquely incorporating references to indigenous American and Mexican religions. Hoffmann describes these American beliefs as “shadowed†reflections of divine truth presenting them through a distinctly Lutheran lens.<br /> <p><p><br /> The text with its Samaritan title Ṭelal be-nahar "shadow in light" features a diverse set of typefaces—Arabic Hebrew and Greek—and includes exotic woodcut inserts a folding plate and text illustrations of various coins. The larger illustrations depict figures such as a flaming bronze idol of Moloch associated with ancient child sacrifice along with artifacts from Gerhard’s collection including a Hindu Bhairava statuette and an Indonesian shadow puppet. Notably Hoffmann mistakenly labels this statuette as a "Chinese idol" underscoring the era’s limited understanding of Asian religions.<br /> <p><p><br /> While many images are borrowed from Athanasius Kircher’s Oedipus Ægyptiacus others directly depict Gerhard’s artifacts like the Bhairava statuette a fierce incarnation of Shiva obtained through the Dutch East India Company by Johann Schelhammer a Lutheran pastor in The Hague.<br /> <p><p><br /> These visual and textual elements combined with Hoffmann’s commentary on Mexican religious practices and a depiction of Huitzilopochtli—the Aztec god of war and the sun symbolizing protection and sacrifice—create a vivid portrayal of 17th-century efforts to interpret global religions within a Christian framework. Additionally an intriguing feature of Hoffmann’s text is its engagement with Asian linguistic elements including a passage in Tamil reflecting his interest in Eastern languages and cultures.<br /> <p><p><br /> Bound with Umbra in Luce are three additional theological works: In Canonicam & Catholicam Jacobi Epistolam Commentarius by Caspar Erasmus Brochmand Trifolium Verae Religionis by Wilhelm Leyser and Harmonia Evangelistarum organized by David Klug. These works were likely compiled together to offer a comprehensive suite of Lutheran scholarship that addresses both scriptural exegesis and comparative theology. While Umbra in Luce examines global religions through a comparative lens the others provide detailed doctrinal guidance for Lutheran clergy reflecting an integrated approach to defending and elucidating Lutheran theology against both external and internal religious perspectives.<br /> <p><p><br /> Literature: Ben-Tov A. 2021. It is the work done with Leopold Infeld and Banash Hoffmann on the N-body problem of motion. In these papers the gravitational field is no longer treated as external. Instead it and the motion of its singular sources are treated simultaneously. Anew approximationscheme is introduced in which the fields are no longer necessarily weak but in which the source velocities are small compared with the light velocity . The equations obtained have found use in situations where Newtonian interaction must be included. 'These equations are widely used in analyses of planetary orbits in the solarsystem. For example the Cal Tech Jet Propulsion Laboratory uses them in modified form to calculate ephmerides for high-precision tracking of planets and spacecraft."Pais "Subtle is the Lord" p. 290-91."The problem of the equation of motion of bodies is the following. The 1916 theory had a classical structure in the sense that there were both field equations the curvature of space-time is determined by the mass and motion of bodies in space-time and equations of motion of bodies the world line of small mass is a geodesic. Are these two statements really separate If the field equations were linear they indeed would be. They are not linear however and Einstein showed in the papers offered that if matter is represented by a point singularity of the metric field these singularities are located on world lines that are geodesics of space-time provided its metric satisfies the equation of general relativity."DSB.Weil: 202 a. 295 both with an asterix denoting a major paper. - Boni: 236 a. 236.1. </em> unknown

Hitler himself had signed declarations that these soldiers were of German blood. These soldiers often believed that they were helping to save the lives of Jewish relatives. "Many while they were fighting their parents were being deported anyway." Rigg. Some 2300 relatives of a group of 1000 soldiers documented by Riggs were killed by the Nazis. See Bryan Mark Rigg "Lives of Hitler's Jewish Soldiers: Untold Tales of Men of Jewish Descent Who Fought for the Third Reich. University Press of Kansas 2009<br /> <br /> Hoffmann in his letter September 13 1943 to Rabbi Max Koppel writes:<br /> <br /> "Dear Doctor You'll be astonished by my lines because I've lost every connection to my relatives who as far as I know are now in America. That is why I am approaching you confidentially with the request to help me in this matter. My father's name is Samuel Felix and comes from Austria-Hungary where we owned a large dye and weaving factory. My father has lived last in Cologne at the Rhine where he owned a textile wholesale. Due to his Jewish faith the events in Germany forced him to flee. I myself took on another name. Maybe I could ask you to visit me here or to send a representative since it is impossible in my situation to convey everything to you by letter. To facilitate this a permission has to be obtained from Washington. Hoping to get a confirmation of receipt of my letter. With sincere regards Willibald Hoffmann"<br /> <br /> POW Camp McCain was established in the Granada district of Mississippi USA in 1942 originally as a training camp for American infantry bound to join the fighting in Europe.
