Die Hals-Nasen-Ohrenheilkunde konnte sich erst so spät zu einem eigenen Fach entwickeln da die zu beobachtenden und zu behandelnden Organe in tiefen dunklen Körperhöhlen liegen; die dem bloßen menschlichen Auge nicht sichtbar sind. So bedurfte es erst der Erfindung eines perforierten Hohlspiegels durch Friedrich Hoffmann 1841 mit dessen Hilfe die Beleuchtung dieser Organe möglich wurde. Friedrich Hofmann 1806-1886 Arzt Geheimer Sanitätsrat in Burgsteinfurt beschreibt seinen perforierten Hohlspiegel der die Beleuchtungstechnik vor allem im HNO- und Augen-Bereich revolutioniert aber auch bei der Urethroskopie verwendet wird HAKEN GRÜNFELD. Die Erfindung war einfach er kratzte den spiegelnden Belag im Zentrum eines runden Toilettenspiegels ab und benutzte dieses Loch als Durchblick Die Bedeutung dieser Entdeckung wurde zuerst nicht erkannt und 1859 beschrieb v. Tröltsch den sogenannten Ohrenspiegel erneut. Seit dieser Zeit erfuhr er eine weite Verbreitung. -cf.
