Includes tissued frontis portrait. Contains a German and a Hebrew section. Vol. 3 (has title Sefer LDovid Tsvi). Particularly important because of two articles: one by Carlebach on why women should cover their hair (Haarverhullung des judischen Weibes); the other is on the first publication anywhere of Maimonides commentary on Rosch Haschanah (Bamberger, S: Die bisher unedierten Teile von Maimonides Mischnah-Commentar zu Rosch Haschanah). All articles are separately paged in roman numerals, with the continuous paging at foot of page. "Bibliographie der schriften und aufsätze des dr. D. Hoffmann, von rabbiner dr. L. Fischer" on pages [vii]-xxiv. The German Encyclopaedia Judaica (vol VIII, 162) notes, that Hoffmann (1843-1921) was a Talmud- und Bibelforscher. Zum 70. Geburtstage H. S gaben seine Freunde und Schüler eine Festschrift heraus (1914). See also the Jüdisches Lexikon (vol. II, 1646): 1873 Dozent für Talmud, Ritualkodizes und Pentateuchexegese in dem von Esriel Hildesheimer neu begründeten Rabbinerseminar zu Berlin. Dort dozierte er 48 Jahre lang und hatte den größten Teil der jetzt amtierenden gesetzestreuen deutschen Rabb. Zu Schülern. Nach Hildesheimers Tode wurde er Rektor des Seminars. H. War einer der besten Kenner des Talmuds und der halachischen Midraschlit. Seiner Zeit, wurde als halachische Autorität, auch im Kampfe gegen die Reformbewegung und gegen den Antisemitismus, vielfach angerufen und war ferner der erste offenbarungsgläubige J., der es unternahm, die Graf-Wellhausensche Bibelkritik mit Mitteln der Wissenschaft zu wiederlegen.
