Whyte-Melville 1821-1878 is "remembered as the greatest of the hunting novelists. he writes best about the curious English mania for equine sports" Sutherland p. 672. Whyte-Melville's prolific output includes poetry military novels drawing on his experience in the Crimean War scenes of contemporary life and historical romances this being the genre in which he first made his name. The illustrators were chosen for their skill in depicting sporting activities. Bound in half calf with marbled paper covered boards. Externally smart with rubbing to the extremities and scuffing to the boards. Joints are partly cracked however remain firm.
