La madre Mary Wollstonecraft, filosofa femminista, muore poco dopo averla messa al mondo, e così sta al padre, William Godwin, crescerla e educarla in una casa frequentata dai maggiori intellettuali del tempo e segnata da quel lutto mai del tutto rimarginato - è sulla tomba della madre che Mary impara a leggere, seguendo le lettere con il dito. Nel 1814, a diciassette anni, scappa con il futuro marito, il poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley; i due attraversano l'Europa in compagnia della sorellastra di Mary, Claire. Nel 1816 i tre, insieme al romanziere John Polidori e al poeta Lord Byron, sono protagonisti di un singolare gioco: per ingannare la noia dei giorni piovosi sul lago di Ginevra, Byron propone a ciascuno di scrivere un racconto di paura. Inaspettatamente, è la fantasia di una Mary diciannovenne a primeggiare, creando uno dei mostri più celebri e terrificanti di sempre, in cui riversa molto di sé: la fatica del parto e lo spettro delle morti infantili riverberano nel tema della creazione di una nuova vita, così come la malattia che da piccola l'aveva costretta a tenere un braccio in fasce, gonfio e sfigurato, ispira la dolente mostruosità della creatura. Sembra l'inizio di una sfolgorante carriera, ma la morte improvvisa di Percy relegherà Mary nel ruolo ancillare e più tradizionalmente femminile di custode dell'eredità letteraria del marito.
