1829183936London: printed by S. G. Fairbrother 1829. A playbill from the Theatre Royal English Opera House advertising a performance on 14 July 1829 of Richard Brinsley Peake's famous stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel. The play debuted at the Theatre Royal on 28 July 1823. Shelley attended a performance on 29 August 1823 and wrote to Leigh Hunt shortly afterwards: "But lo & behold! I found myself famous! - Frankenstein has prodigious success as a drama. The play bill amused me extremely for in the list of dramatis personae came --- by Mr T. Cooke: this nameless mode of naming the unnameable is rather good". The current playbill maintains this naming convention for the Creature this time acted by Richard John O. Smith who also played the part in Henry M. Milner's The Man and the Monster! Or the Fate of Frankenstein 1826. Shelley received neither credit nor remuneration for Peake's production having published the novel anonymously in 1818. Its great theatrical success moved her father Wlliam Godwin to bring out the 1823 second edition of Frankenstein now crediting the author on the title page. Broadside 345 x 203 mm. Mounted framed and glazed frame size: 426 x 285 mm. A couple of small holes slight chips to edges with loss to lower right corner just affecting text. In well-preserved condition. unknown

1970155474N.p.: N.p. 1970. Collection of twelve vintage oversize double weight photographs eleven vintage contact sheets and six vintage photographs taken by noted fashion photographer Ara Gallant. Photographer's stamp on the versos.

Gallant began his career in high fashion as a hairstylist for Vogue in the early 1960s becoming the first stylist to be paid solely to style hair by a magazine. He was best known for perfecting the "flying hair" technique most memorably captured on a portrait of Twiggy in 1968. During his tenure at Vogue he worked with a number of prominent photographers including Richard Avedon and Irving Penn and his work was featured on 26 Vogue covers in total.

Gallant would begin working as a photographer in the 1970s succeeding Sari Marks as staff photographer for the fashion magazine Ambiance. Gallant became well known around New York for his personal style as much as his photographs sporting all black from head to toe wearing high heeled cowboy boots and a Japanese schoolboy hat lining his eyes with black kohl and frequenting Andy Warhol's Studio 54. By the 1980s drug use and financial troubles would force Gallant to sell his apartment in the West End relocating to Los Angeles where he would pursue an ultimately unsuccessful career in the film industry.

The photographs in the collection taken throughout the 1970s feature a who's who of contemporary celebrities and are shot in Gallant's typically fantastical and glamorous style with an androgynous bent and of course distinctive hair. Gallant would enjoy a period of renewed interest after a collection of his styling and photographic work was published by Damiani in 2010 edited by David Wills.

Photographs ranging from 6.25 x 7.75 inches to 11 x 14 inches. Near Fine to Very Good plus. N.p. unknown

188911897London: Richard Bentley & Son 1889. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good . Large octavo 2 volumes 369pp. 325pp. illustrated. A crisp clean unopened set very good or better in the publisher's charming textured paper over mustard yellow cloth boards. Inner hinges tender with some partial cracks though the bindings are holding firm. Gentle corner wear mostly in one spot and light finger-soiling to the light cloth. Contents clean and very fresh with nearly all gatherings unopened; certainly unread. A surprisingly uncommon set which contains a great deal of correspondence involving the author of "Frankenstein" as well as a biography by Florence A. "Mrs. Julian" Marshall who was best known as a composer and conductor. As best we can tell this is the first full-length and separately published biography of Mary Shelley to have been published. Scarce in the trade and appearing infrequently at auction. OCLC holdings are hopelessly muddled but spot-checking suggests the vast majority of purported holdings are digital-only. Lightly rubbed cocked lower joint split chipping to head and foot of sunned spine. Marbled endpapers armorial bookplate of Glenbarr to FEP partially clipped contemporary inked ownership inscription to head of half-title. William St Clair's copy with his distinctive pencilled ownership inscription and manuscript notes to FEP: 'Contemporary pirate not recorded in Lyle. This must be an extremely rare volume: I have never heard tell of it. Resembles early English publisher's cloth but presumably the book has been rebound since the ownership inscription is clipped'. The first continental edition issued as a part of Brussels-based publisher A. Wahlen's Modern British Authors series of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's 1797-1851 fifth and penultimate novel; a romance that differs from her earlier work in its shift away from the supernatural or historical to a more contemporary setting to critique the limitations of the conventional Victorian class system. The novel's modern editor Lisa Vargo Lodore 1997 Introduction p.18-19 has noted the text's engagement with the education and social role of women suggesting that it dissects a patriarchal culture that pressured women into dependence on men. In the view of critic Betty T. Bennett Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley: An Introduction 1998: 'the novel proposes egalitarian educational paradigms for women and men which would bring social justice as well as the spiritual and intellectual means by which to meet the challenges life invariably brings'. The Literary Gazette No. 949 1835 heaped praise upon the novel dubbing Shelley 'one of the most original of our modern writers'. William St Clair 1937-2021 British scholar and senior civil servant notable as the author of The Godwins and the Shelleys The Biography of a Family 1989 and The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period 2004. . 8vo.
