Reworked and embellished original artwork Published within Rackham's illustrated edition of Hans Andersen's Fairy-Tales in 1932 a work described by Hamilton as "ideal - even the classic - late Rackham". This drawing was originally reproduced on page 125 as a black and white drawing for "The Steadfast Tin Soldier". The publishers of the book sent Rackham and his wife to Denmark for a week in November 1931 "to collect Danish atmosphere for the book" as stated by Hamilton. In a letter Rackham wrote that "Copenhagen is a very beautiful city. Lots of water ships fishing boats quays - everywhere. It is rather fatiguing to me. I have to talk so much and behave myself so well all the while taking notes and notes for dear life". Ink and watercolour drawings generally command higher prices than pen and ink drawings. Rackham ever the commercial artist frequently reworked his black and white drawings and as in this example occasionally added detail. The published version shows the steadfast tin soldier in a paper boat. The reworked illustration has indistinct lines of newsprint added to the boat made out of a piece of newspaper. Andersen was born in Bergen Norway and emigrated as an infant with his family to Newport Rhode Island. As a young artist he mingled among Newport's wealthy elite and spent some time as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's art teacher. At the age of 21 Andersen travelled to Europe eventually settling in Rome. There he pursued his artistic interest in monumental classically inspired pieces believing that they stimulated in the viewer a desire for self-improvement. He devoted much of his time designing a perfect 'World City' filled with art which would motivate humanity to achieve a near Utopian state. The present work is the culmination of his theories and may be seen as a precursor to later modernist visions such as Le Corbusier's Ville Contemporaine 1922. The book is in two parts. The first deals with the history of the city and monumental architecture and seeks inspiration in classical and contemporary notions of city planning - Paris and Washington DC feature prominently. The second part details Andersen's imaginary urban landscape complete with works of art for the 'World City'. Olympic stadia galleries for the arts and sciences as well as government buildings are all outlined and placed upon a defined grid plan with an emphasis on a grand central avenue acting as the axis of the city. With an ink drawing by the artist First edition presentation copy inscribed by the artist on the title page "To Madame Alfred du Cros with all best wishes from Edmund Dulac 1911" together with a fine ink drawing of the head of the emperor from "The Nightingale". The likely recipient is Louise du Cros 1865-1927 the American wife of Jacques Alfred du Cros 1868-1946. He was a director of the Dunlop Rubber Company. In 1911 they lived in the Kensington area of London. Louise Pemberton married Edgar Hincks in 1885 and she married again in 1901. She is known to have corresponded with the family of Mark Twain. A review of the illustrated books of 1911 published in Art and Literature December 1911 found one reviewer stating "in certain qualities of fantasy and delicate strength and lurid imaginative daring Mr Rackham and Mr Pogany are. inimitable but for sheer grace and poetry of feeling I am inclined to give the palm to Mr Edmund Dulac. I doubt if Mr Dulac has ever done better work as a book-illustrator than he has put into the series of colour-plates with which he has illustrated Hans Andersen.". The reviewer in the Saturday Review of Politics Literature Science and Art 10 December 1911 stated simply that this was "a really beautiful book with illustrations of exceptional merit. As pictures for children nothing could be more attractive than Mr Dulac's watercolour drawings". Quarto. Frontispiece and 27 mounted colour plates by Edmund Dulac. 19373657641937. Softcover. Fine. A collection of 104 original artworks 85 hand-painted color illustrations and 19 woodcut prints on fine paper sheets ranging in size from about 4 ½†x 7†to 8†x 12â€. Most measure about 6†x 8â€. All are in fine condition neatly laid-in plastic sleeves in four later vintage albums. The designs are notable for their striking portraits of figures from literature with distinctive quadrilateral eyes and for their layering of dark colors often with gold and silver which gives them a three-dimensional and jewel-like luminosity similar to Persian miniature paintings. Most are signed with the monogram "AM" in paint or pencil and we know from provenance that the artist went by the name Anne Marie. We have reason to believe her full name may have been Anne Marie Bonnet and that at least some of her work was commissioned by the publisher Ben Abramson although we have been unable to discover any further information. Approximately half of the works in this collection are neatly captioned or dated by the artist in pencil various dates beginning in 1937. Also laid in are loose sheets with her handwritten captions descriptions of Egyptian deities and quotes from Hamlet and the works of Tennyson which identify the subjects in some of the portfolios but not all. The collection can be divided into various subjects: Hamlet; Selections from Alfred Lord Tennyson; "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen; Egyptian Deities; Le Morte D’Arthur; Salome; The Crusades; and The Magic Mountain. A beautiful and unique collection of highly accomplished works that appear to be for books or a series that as far as we can tell went unpublished. Further details available upon request. unknown

The final page contains a table of contents listing the stories. This second edition was was originally printed in a limited run of 3500 copies. Text in Yiddish. Endpapers printed in pale green with repeated design of stylized peacocks. <br /> <br /> During his lifetime Hans Christian Andersen whose fairy tales have become a classic was second only to Charles Dickens as the most popular author in the Western world. Here his famed narratives get the artistic treatment of Dulac who brings characters to life for the reader. A stunning copy unique and arguably the finest copy of the Deluxe Edition. The binding and endpapers do not conform to Hughey's description and appear to be unique to this handsome copy. As she notes the pigskin binding "brandy colour" not dark chocolate-brown as here should only have two thin gilt rules as frame gilt lettering date 1911 on spine and white endpapers not illustrated as here and in the trade edition. Hughey who had only seen two copies of the Edition De Luxe William Randolph Hearst's and another viewed at a Washington book fair suggested that this copy was "done close to original printing time November 1911. There were a lot of oddball copies done then.The title was sold very quickly - all sold by December 1911." The endpapers here were available at the time of the trade edition and it is possible that someone or the firm did this for copy #20. Hughey also said that this "copy's binding design on front cover is clearly an adaptation of the endpapers but I do not think by Dulac as it does not appear in any of his other editions of Hans Andersen's work. Someone may not have liked the plain cover." This copy is better for the personalization. <br /> <br /> French-born anglophile Edmond Dulac 1882-1953 was one of the most prized artists of the "golden age" of book illustration. A gifted artist especially in the medium of watercolor Dulac's ability to render luxurious detail and subtle emotions is otherworldly. He is best known for his illustrations for books and magazines although he also designed for the stage and wrote music; in moments of financial insecurity he produced serialized cartoons and became an authority on postage stamp design White.<br /> <br /> Hughey 27. 1924032471<p>London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited 1924 A very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in full gilt-decorated vellum binding signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration. He began the work in 1912 but the disruption caused by World War I meant that it was not published until 1924 - and although a beautiful production it could not afford the number of plates that embellished East of the Sun West of the Moon his previous work. The market for expensive illustrated gift books declined significantly after the War and Nielsen only illustrated two more works before moving to Copenhagen and working on set designs for the theatre. This book is number 119 of 500 printed. The vellum binding has bright illustration. It has some grubbiness and darkening to the spine; a slight bump to the bottom front corner; and slight marking to the back board particularly the bottom corner. The spine is cocked to the front. Top page edges are gilt; side edge is untrimmed. The contents are in very bright and clean condition; occasional very light spotting to tissue guards. There is a slight crease to the tissue guard to the frontispiece and a small light brown area to the bottom margin of p 153 lightly mirrored on 152.
