19205313Large quarto 27.5x22.5 cm. wrappers 10 pp. The Omanut or Omonuth publishing house Moscow-Odessa-Frankfurt-Tel Aviv and its Gamiliel Library of children's literature was founded by the scion Shoshana Persitz 1894-1969 funded by her father Hillel Zlatopolskii and her husband Iosif Persitz. Shoshana was 24 when she began the press. Omanut is the Hebrew word for "art." Shoshana was deeply involved already in the Tarbut group which in 1917 vowed to restore Hebrew language and she wanted Hebrew to be the mother tongue of Russian Jews who were historically prosecuted and Hebrew was confined to religious texts. Persitz was inspired by the esthetics of the Mir iskusstva group of artists and to print children's books with fine works of renowned Western authors --- Lewis Carroll Jules Verne Charles Dickens and printed as beautifully as possible. Jewish children would thus be able to partake of best children's literature in their own language. This would be a hidur Mitzvah --- a sanctification of the world through beauty inculcated into young Jewish readers. Originating in Moscow in 1918 Persitz was unable to print the first titles there because the Bolsheviks nationalized her equipment. She with her family together with the entire Tarbut group relocated in a special train provided by a German diplomat to Odessa where the press found temporary quarters. In Odessa the artist group Havarut Tzavarim was formed and connected with Omanut. It consisted of four Jewish artists who provided graphics for most of the books issued under the Gamiliel Library imprint. They decided not to attribute work to any one member acting as a single bunt. After Odessa fell to the Soviets and the revolutionary government posed the same threat to the press there Persitz exiled to Germany at Homburg vor der Höhe near Frankfurt where Omanut continued to publish and release the largest number of titles of the Gamiliel Library which were twelve in all. In 1925 the press moved from Europe to Tel-Aviv and Shoshana became a member of the Knesset. The Omanut publishing house continued to 1945 with a strong emphasis on educational texts. But the Gamliel Library was discontinued after leaving Europe and received scant attention thereafter. A beautiful chapter of Hebrew children's literature deserves to be more widely known and honor paid to this wonderful series released in small quantities and currently held by institutions. The present work The Nightengale has rtwork by Heorhyi Narbut 1886-1920 Ukrainian master graphic artist for this famous tale of Hans Christian Andersen. One of the early releases of this series from Odessa by the Omanut Press which originated with Knebel's Russian language printing. One institutional holding found worldwide LOC. A fine copy. 1846158671846. "The Emperor's New Clothes" Translated by Charles Boner with Numerous Illustrations by the Count Pocci. London: Joseph Cundall 1846. Original blind-stamped blue morocco-grain cloth. First Edition in English of this group of fairy tales -- one of three different groups of Andersen tales accomplished in 1846 by three different translators and three different London publishers. The nine tales in this edition are "The Nightingale" "The Buckwheat" "The Fellow-Traveller" "The Resolute Leaden Soldier" "The Flying Trunk" "The Garden of Paradise" "The Wild Swans" "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Ole Lucköie." The first-published of the three earlier in 1846 was Andersen's first book in English -- Chapman & Hall's WONDERFUL STORIES FOR CHILDREN translated by Mary Howitt though misspelling the author's last name; it did not do well largely because both this Cundall group of tales and William Pickering's DANISH FAIRY TALES AND LEGENDS translated without credit by Caroline Peachey came out soon after. The C&H group generally did not include any of the tales for which Andersen is known today; the only C&H tales reappearing in this Cundall volume are "The Constant Tin Soldier" sic "The Garden of Paradise" and "Ole Lucköie." "The Wild Swans" and "The Emperor's New Clothes" first appeared both in the Pickering volume and in this Cundall volume the precedence between those two is unknown. Included are four plates plus numerous chapter head-pieces and tail-pieces by "the Count Pocci" Franz Graf von Pocci an artist writer and composer who was also an official in the court of King Ludwig of Bavaria. This volume is still in the original blue cloth and is in very good-plus condition little soil or wear though the volume is recased preserving the original pale-yellow endpapers with reinforcing strips at the gutters. In our experience this Cundall edition is the scarcest of the three 1846 collections of tales. See Quayle CHILDREN'S p. 40. unknown

All edges gilt. Excellent clean and well-preserved set w. numerous beautiful illustrations. W. both half-titles and frontispieces. Two first editions both containing the first French translations of the present works by Hans Christian Andersen. With original handwritten and signed presentations in both volumes from the translator Ernest Grégoire for Robert Watt.Robert Watt 1837-94 was a leading figure in the Danish modernist breakthrough 1870-90 and a famous figure in Danish cultural life in the second half of the 19th century. In spite of the age difference he became closely connected with Hans Christian Andersen and it was he who accompagnied Andersen to the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867. He was also the one to encourage Andersen to have his fairy tales translated into and published in French and he is the one who made this translation happen. Thus this particur presentation copy is of great interest.In his diaries from 1873 and 1874 Andersen fairly frequently writes about the preparation of this translation about Watt and Gregoire. On the 31st of March Vol. X p. 54-55 he writes: "Besøg af Watt der havde faaet Brev fra den franske Journalist Gregoire der vilde oversætte og lade illustrere mine Eventyr med Undtagelse af dem Soldi havde udgivet." "Visit by Watt who had received a letter from the French journalist Gregoire who wanted to translate my fairy tales and have them illustrated except for the ones that Soldi had published." own translation . On several occations Andersen worries about the rights to the French translations and he is not happy with the fact that Gregoire apparently claims them. On the 13th of April Vol. X p.64 he writes: "-Hele Dagen Hoste og mit Nerveuse Middag hos Eduard Collin der skrev for mig en Skrivelse til Gregoire efter min Opfattelse og ikke som Watt havde givet mig til Underskrift. Strax paa Aftenen kom Watt og blev ilde stemt ved at jeg ikke vilde underskrive hans Skrivelse sagde at MIN havde ikke Betydning for Loven i Paris jeg forstod ikke hele hans Forklaring og da han vedblev kom jeg i saadan nerveus Stemning at jeg brast i Graad og sank om paa Sophaen." - The entire day cough and my nerves dinner at Eduard Collin who wrote for me a letter for Gregoire according to my conception and not like Watt had given me to sign.
