The Third Man was written in 8 weeks as the screen treatment that the author created as a first step in the production of the film version which appeared in 1949 and won first prize at the Cannes Film Festival and also won a BAFTA for Best British Film of 1950. Robert Krasker won an Oscar in 1951 for Best Cinematography Black & White. The Third Man was directed by Carol Reed and starred Joseph Cotten Alida Valli Orson Welles and Trevor Howard. The Third Man is Graham Greene's most iconic tale set in post-war Vienna 'a smashed dreary city' occupied by the four allied powers.
