Hardy considered that this would probably be his last appearance on the literary stage. He has written that the poems included have been written with reasonable care though considering his age not quite with the zest of a young man new to print. It had become obvious that a lifetime of excellence allowed for what might have once been considered extraordinary to be taken as expected and normative. A collection then of fine poems by a master at his height and greatest reputation. Macmillan hardcover
