A very attractive early copy of Ruskin's essays with an intertwined "JR" monogram in black and gilt embossed on the front cover and bright gilt title on spine with 5 raised bands. Size: Sextodecimo 16mo; up to 6 3/4" / 15-17.5 cm tall. Text block is tight clean and unmarked. Binding is tight and spine fully attached; leather is good with minimal wear showing around the edges and on the raised bands of the spine. Frontispiece portrait of Ruskin protected by tissue paper with decorative title for this edition in addition to the regular title page. Some foxing on tissue and decorative title page only not affecting the frontispiece or the rest of the text which is bright and clean. All edges gilt in bright rich condition. Burgundy leather fine binding with 2 thick gilt frames and large diagonal gilt title on the front cover gilt frames on the back cover. gilt lines on the cover edges and tiny little gilt flowers on the inner turn-ins. 5 raised bands to the spine with gilt title in the second compartment and gilt flower motifs and corner pieces in the other compartments. All pages edged with thick bright gilt. On thick cream paper the texts are printed in a red border on each page with titles at the head of each page in large ornate font and vignettes and red initial capitals at the start of each chapter. Condition near fine front hinge repaired else fine contents very clean a very attractive book. I could not find another copy of this book for sale at this time nor much information about the author J.M.S. Brooke though there is this copy of a letter he wrote to the editor of The Times in 1888 "Sir -- Paying my daily visit to my church this afternoon I was surprised to find the caretaker in a semi-stupified state. Asking her what was the matter she told me that a man had just entered the church and finding her all alone inquired whether I was in the vestry. On receiving a reply in the negative he said "I see you are alone" and immediately took out a pocket-handkerchief and dashed it in her face. The strong smell of whatever liquid it had been steeped in dazed and stupefied her and she for a moment or two lost her consciousness. The noise of some of the workmen on the roof seemed to have alarmed this scoundrel and he bolted out of the church. This incident Sir perhaps might afford a clue. At any rate it will warn solitary women who are in charge of churches. I am Sir your obedient servant J. M. S. BROOKE. Fairly tight and decent first edition of this Illinois fiction whose dedication page thanks "General U.S. Grant who was Colonel of the 21st Illinois Regiment while I was its chaplain." Delightful full-page engravings by Frank Beard. Crane was a Springfield preacher and this colorful novel depicts the rugged life of the Methodist preachers who traveled from village to village settlement to settlement preaching the gospel -- much as young Springfield attorney Lincoln traveled the judicial circuit trying cases in tiny rural villages. Edges and corners have wear and occasional chipping there is occasional small loss to paper surfaces different qualities of paper used in the magazine have different degrees of tanning and some exterior surfaces are soiled.; The Philistine: A Periodical of Protest was a pioneering "little magazine" that was the next step up from "pamphleting" in the United States. Co-founded by Elbert Hubbard of Roycroft The Philistine was a vehicle for his thoughts rants repackaged thoughts of others and advertising that made it one of Roycroft's few self-sustaining periodicals. The Philistine published essays and other small works by various authors but most content was stated as being written by Fra Elbertus Elbert Hubbard. It's clear that staff writers wrote the majority of advertising copy that stressed the value of cars furs olives rubber tile and razor blades socks and soap typewriters tonics and tooth powders. Roycroft-produced goods were heavily promoted and one could order leather and metal goods plus furniture from their shops. Roycroft books were always advertised including some that later scholarship determined were never produced as stated. The magazine was economical to produce and simple to the point of being crude. Butcher paper covers were printed in black and red with an occasional green capital and interior text was in black with the occasional leading capital in red. Other than the advertisements there were no illustrations accompanying the text. The back covers however were an opportunity for Roycroft's best illustrators to create caricatures that lampooned the government the military organized religion social movements and the various follies of our society. Known figures in the Roycroft community were subjects of more gentle humor in these caricatures. This lot of The Philistine is 78 copies. Back covers typically have "Roycroft mottos" or aphorisms framed in Kelmscott style. A very occasional back cover advertisement. Dates of publication are generally 1898 through 1914. No volume year is a complete run of that year. These 6" tall chapbooks have string sewn binding that is holding well but are in a condition typical for this ephemeral 10-cent little magazine that was not intended to last. Conditions vary from Very Good- to Very Good.; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 40 pages . The Roycroft Print Shop paperback

X-library with no numerals on spine emboss on title-page and withdrawn stamp. Scarce. <br/><br/>Mrs. Susan Lyman of Northampton Mass. married J. Peter Lesley the State Geologist of Pennsylvania and President of the American Institute for the Advancement of Science. Susan was the daughter of Judge Joseph Lyman of Northampton. The first printing of this memoir was limited to only 100 copies and titled MEMOIRS OF MRS. ANNE J. LYMAN in 1876. This edition was re-titled RECOLLECTIONS OF MY MOTHER: it omits some letters from the first edition but includes anecdotes and letters new to this edition. These are extensive New England memoirs concentrated on Northampton Mass. The Illustrations include an actual mounted photograph of a painted portrait of Judge Lyman. Includes correspondence from Ralph Waldo Emerson Myerson D97 q.v. Lydia Maria Child Austin Flint as well as many family members. Geo. H. Ellis hardcover

Still overall a clean tight and attractive little set. TEXT IN FRENCH. D'Aunoy was known for her literary fairy tales told in the conversational manner of the salon.
