A tight lovely first edition of these fictional tales about early California life many first published in "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" under the title "Some Folks" -- which appears here on the half-title page and as the frontispiece caption. "Romance of California Life" is the best known title of this author and "New York Herald" literary and drama critic 1842-1921 -- although he also authored the anonymous and legendary1876 juvenile title "Helen's Babies.
