1991043516Athens: National and Capodistrian University of Athens 1991 Book. Near Fine. Soft cover. Signed by Authors. First Thus. Thesis submitted to the University of Athens interpreting some Greek mythical elements in the writings of the Australian novelist Patrick White."Patrick White: Magna Mater and Her Son-Lover examines intensively nine novels by the Australian Nobel prize-winner Patrick White. The writer views the novels as a sequence following the circular pattern of the artist's spiritual quest the mythological Odyssey and the psychological process of individuation. The whole individual is defined by Jung as the one who can reconcile the conscious and the unconscious while Homer presented the same individual as the wise Odysseus. Interestingly White visualizes the whole individual in the twentieth century as the one who recovers and establishes a relationship with the roots of human existence vegetative and animal life in other words the universe" Includes a facsimile of an entertaining letter by PW commenting on his reception of ths thesis. 455p. bibliography. It is no exaggeration to say that Angus McBean revolutionized portraiture in the 1930s or that he immortalized the likes of Audrey Hepburn Marlene Dietrich and Elizabeth Taylor. Blending wit drama and fantasy with the consummate skill of a master photographer McBean was the most prominent theater photographer of his generation and along with Beaton the last of the British avant-garde studio photographers. For the first time since his death in 1990 McBean's photographs of stars such as Vivien Leigh Peggy Ashcroft Laurence Olivier John Gielgud and Audrey Hepburn and his rarely seen color prints from the 1960s of the Beatles Maria Callas and Shirley Bassey are brought together in this fascinating book.
