Small stain on title page. Bound in period papered boards or faux-vellum rubbed. A piece of paper covering is missing from bottom rear board. An old receipt for purchase of the book dated 1925 is loosely inserted. Johann Jacob Breitinger 1701-1776 Influential Swiss-German literary critic whose writings along with those of Johann Jacob Bodmer helped to inspire a transition from Baroque to Modern German Literature. In 1740 Breitinger published his "critische Dichtkunst" 2 vols a direct challenge to the classical viewpoint of leading Leipzig critic Johann Christoph Gottsched. Breitinger argued contrary to Gottsched that the poets passion should not be hindered by artificial rules i.e. rhym. The feud which ensued with Breitinger and Bodmer on the one side and Gottsched on the other helped to make way for writers such as Schlegel and Lessing. Breitinger followed up his 1740 work with further writings. In 1744 he anonymously published his "Verteidigung der schweizerischen Muse" a defense of Albrecht von Hallers nature poetry. Ensemble de 33 photographies originales sur papier, réparties sur 6 planches, titrées et illustrées à la main, à l'encre et à la gouache.Les photographies mettent en scène le port, la célèbre Promenade des Anglais et la "jetée promenade", le village Saint Antoine, le Vallon de la Lanterne, la place Masséna (grotte, préparation du Carnaval), la cascade du canal.Plusieurs vues ont été prises de la gare ou de la cathédrale. Quelques clichés témoignent d'excursions à La Turbie, à Menton, ainsi qu'au Château d'If, au large de Marseille. De nombreuses illustrations ornent également les planches : frises décoratives à motifs variés, à l'encre noire ou rouge, fleurons, petits personnages, animaux, titres ornés, deux paysages à l'aquarelle et à la gouache, un blason de la ville. Au verso d'une planche, le portrait du Maréchal André Masséna, natif de Nice, réalisé à l'encre. Très intéressant ensemble, qui reflète une certaine diffusion sociale de la pratique photographique - au sein de l'élite bourgeoise - à la fin du XIXe siècle, en lien avec l'évolution des techniques, à la fois en ce qui concerne la prise de vue et les procédés de tirage. Equipés d'appareils d'utilisation de plus en plus aisée, de nombreux amateurs immortalisent alors les petits et grands moments de la vie de tous les jours, constituant albums de souvenirs et collections privées qui consacrent le rôle désormais essentiel de l'image dans la culture de la Belle Epoque. L'auteur de ces clichés, qui ne manquait ni d'humour ni de talent, a par ailleurs enrichi son travail artisanal d'autres éléments esthétiques : décors et ornements graphiques issus de l'univers du livre (imitant fleurons,bandeaux, culs-de-lampe, séparations de chapitres...), dessins "classiques" (paysages, portraits), inspirés du mouvement Art Nouveau ou influencés par la presse et l'affiche (typographie fantaisiste, caricatures,...).
