Ensemble de 57 photographies originales sur papier, réparties sur 9 planches, titrées et illustrées à la main, à l'encre et à la gouache.Les photographies représentent des portraits (individuels ou collectifs), les loisirs et jeux (cerceau, croquet, bicyclette, balançoire, promenades, chasse, farniente...), des travaux des champs et sont accompagnées de légendes, souvent humoristiques. De nombreuses illustrations ornent également les planches : personnages, titres et motifs décoratifs, fleurs, frises, paysages ... Au verso des planches, 8 portraits de personnalités réalisés à l'encre : Etienne Marcel, Bailly, Ledru-Rollin, Turgot, Talleyrand, Eugène Cavaignac, Daguerre et Niepce, ainsi que des symboles (fleur de lys) ou armoiries et blasons éxécutés à l'encre et à la gouache. Très intéressant ensemble, qui reflète une certaine diffusion sociale de la pratique photographique - au sein de l'élite bourgeoise - à la fin du XIXe siècle, en lien avec l'évolution des techniques, à la fois en ce qui concerne la prise de vue et les procédés de tirage. Equipés d'appareils d'utilisation de plus en plus aisée, de nombreux amateurs immortalisent alors, comme ici, les petits et grands moments de la vie de tous les jours, constituant albums de souvenirs et collections privées qui consacrent le rôle désormais essentiel de l'image dans la culture de la Belle Epoque. L'auteur de ces clichés, qui ne manquait ni d'humour ni de talent, a par ailleurs enrichi son travail artisanal d'autres éléments esthétiques : décors et ornements graphiques issus de l'univers du livre (imitant fleurons,bandeaux, culs-de-lampe, séparations de chapitres...), dessins "classiques" (paysages, portraits), inspirés du mouvement Art Nouveau (fleurs, vignette "japonisante") ou influencés par la presse et l'affiche (typographie fantaisiste, caricatures,...).

Il sagit bien sur dun tirage confidentiel limité à 500 exemplaires, celui-ci en parfaite condition est lun des 475 (N 123 ) sur Velin de Rives. Rare exemplaire dans une grande qualité coloristique.

19275591<p><strong>First Russian edition.</strong></p><p><strong>Sherwood Anderson</strong> 1876-1941 was dubbed the '<em>American Dostoevsky</em>' in one contemporary Russian review. His novels were popular in Soviet Russia and the first book the short story cycle '<em>Winesburg Ohio</em>' which was published in 1924 marked the beginning of his significant popularity in the 1920s.<br />The translator of the novel <strong>Mark Volosov </strong>1895-1941 had an extraordinary life. He fought on the front lines during World War I was taken prisoner escaped to Norway and eventually made his way to the USA. After spending several years at sea he returned to his homeland where he became a translator from English rendering the works of American writers such as T.S. Stribling Eugene O'Neill Upton Sinclair Herbert Kemp and Erskine Caldwell into Russian. At the onset of World War II he joined the front lines and served in the '<em>the writers' company</em>' alongside the futurist Alexander Chachikov and the Jewish poet Aron Kushnirov. 19315593<p><strong>First Russian book edition of the novel the first part of Dos Passos' U.S.A. trilogy.</strong></p><p>Before this edition only extracts had been published in periodicals.<br />The translation was prepared by <strong>Valentin Stenich</strong> 1897-1938 a poet who also translated James Joyce's 'Ulysses' into Russian. Stenich was arrested in November 1937 and executed. All editions of Dos Passos's books were banned in Russia until 1958.<br />The cover design was created by graphic artist and book illustrator <strong>Alexey Ushin </strong>1904-1942.
