192313405Chicago: N.p. probably White Paper Club 1923. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff wrappers. 3pp. Very good. Slightest of soiling -- overall tight and attractive. Eulogy by Stone a well-known Chicago physician who signs boldly in full in brown ink at the conclusion. Hough 1857-1923 was a journalist and rabid conservationist who authored popular novels such as "Singing Mouse Stories" 1895 "Mississippi Bubble" 1902 and "The Covered Wagon" 1922. He served as president of the White Paper Club -- a downtown Chicago group of writers journalists and publishers -- and Stone's is a refreshingly simple original and sincere expression. Tipped to the front wrapper below the decorative leaf device that encircles the title is a handsome large-margined signature of Hough clipped from a letter as "Yours sincerely" is typed above it. One "Time" magazine correspondent described Hough in 1923: "To discover the focal point of literary life in Chicago that literary center of the middle-west some say indeed of America is a difficult task. Perhaps it is at the White Paper Club where one finds genial Emerson Hough active white-haired forward-looking rather than given to reminiscing planning a fishing trip with enthusiasm!" The limitation of this pamphlet is unknown but likely quite small as it would have been produced strictly for circulation among club members. Highly unusual. N.p. [probably White Paper Club] paperback
