Frontispiece 13 full-page called-for plates. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear and touch of age toning. A superb tight and lovely first edition of this potboiler about to cite rear jacket panel "the intense and many-hued romance of a Blighted Being and the prettiest wildest bit of American mischief who ever dared all the conventions and played havoc with hearts" -- and with the rarely-present dust jacket present and quite attractive. As if that isn't enough a near fine heavy stock 3" X 2" card is mounted to the front flyleaf on which she's boldly penned "Very sincerely / -- Alice Hegan Rice --" on her personal imprinted calling card -- mounted in such a way that a precise flyleaf opening allows the imprinted "Mrs. Cale Young Rice" to be viewed opposite the half-title page this side of card shows inoffensive old mounting traces. Very scarce in this form. Rice was a Kentucky novelist 1870-1942 best remembered for her 1902 bestseller "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch"; husband Cale Young Rice 1872-1943 was a well-known poet and playwright. Stiff unmarked books bound in brick cloth. Gilt decorated leather spines with 4 raised bands marbled endpapers and ribbon marker. 1830 - 1837 are 5" x 7.5". 1838 - 1844 are 6.5" x 9.5" Moderate shelfwear mainly to corners. Moderate foxing to endpapers and reverse of some of the etchings but pages are bright and crisp. Up to 18 steel-plate tissue-guarded etchings per volume. Larger editions printed in Paris the smaller in London. The publication history of "The Keepsake" is complicated but these appear to be first editions. After a brief introduction a chapter is devoted to each of the surviving plays the action and significance of which are discussed scene by scene. From this analysis emerges a magisterial account of the development of Sophocles' dramatic technique as shown both in the structure of individual scenes and of the play as a whole. The development of his treatment of character from the earlier 'enclosed" type to the freely interacting and interrelating figures of the late plays is also brought out. Reinhardt discusses the relation of the inner world of Sophocles' heroes to the world in which they live and to the "daimonic" world of the gods and the way in which Sophocles' language and style evolve in response to all these developments.
