Burkhard's book was two lectures attacking the learned quacks of his time ranging from the doctors to the mathematicians and from the philosophers to the theolgians. He names names and does not withhold his indignation. It was suppressed upon publication. This its first English-language edition is limited to 1475 copies. With four illustrations. This work inspired imitators including CHARLATANARIA MEDICORUM. "The most I have attempted to do hiere is to show how much fraud and pretense are sometimes used to deceive the unwary and how much so-called learning is empty of significance." - Author's Preface. With the embossed trade stamp of W H Smith on front free endpaper. THE FIRST LIFE OF DICKENS first published in 1870 barely three weeks after Dickens' death. BLPC gives the author as Henry Thomas Taverner acknowledged in the publisher's preliminary note but the work is also attributed to Joseph Grego and William Moy Thomas. NCBEL gives joint authorship to Taverner and Hotten himself see NCBEL III p.828. The work includes an extensive Appendix of anecdotes and reminiscences. An attractive if slightly aged copy. The normally blank preliminary following front free endpaper carries an original and well-executed water-colour comprising an oval garland of pink blue and white blossoms enclosing a gift inscription lettered in red. Fanny Kingsley's edition of her husband's life and letters was first published in two volumes in 1876 with a Cabinet edition following in 1879. Signed and inscribed by Chicano author and poet Nephtali De Leon on the title page "Para Salvador Ramirez quien me enseno a comprendar el carino de nuestro pueblo." Which translates roughly to "for Salvador Ramirez who taught me to understand the love of our people." A good only copy with heavy wear at the cover edges - scuffing to the covers and a crease to the rear cover. Inside the front cover there is some browning - appears to be from old glue - but not library indications. Mr. Ramirez has used his personal name stamp on the title page and on the last page. Pages are unmarked otherwise and the binding is intact and not split. 95 pp. with illustrations by the author. <br/><br/> First edition paperback
1812R1879<p>First edition. Leather bound in Very Good condition. I suspect that this is an early review copy because this book has no illustrations frontispiece title page publisher details details only on spine. It does have printers name Thomas Davison who printed for John Murray. It is approx 5.5in by 8.75in. Gilt edges dark brown leather sky blue end pages same quality of paper as the book pages. Page count from fly leaf preface would be page vii and the next page as stated is page viii implying no missing pages. The book is in extremely good condition for its age leather bound with gilt shelf wear to the boards binding is tight with gilt edges It has only the first 2 cantos which were issued in 1812 cantos three and four appeared in 1816 and 1818 respectively.<br /><br /></p> hardcover
