Following the withdrawal of the two-volume second edition for fear of libel in 1857 the work was first issued as a single volume in Smith Elder's 'Cheap Edition' series later in the same year. In line with the convention of the period all the plates in each volume are placed together at the front since it was intended that the publisher's binding should be replaced on purchase by a house family or other 'style' binding. Accordingly each volume has the 'Directions to Binder' leaf indicating the proper position of each plate. No. 99 of 155 copies; As New in slipcase with prospectus laid in; 77p. including eleven pages of black and white illustrations and two pages of color inserts; a 7 X 11" sample sheet of the original 1958 Bird & Bull handmade paper is tipped in along with twenty additional tip-ins most of which are in color. An adjunct to the article "Better Late Than Never" is a pair of clay impressions with human figures and cuneiform inscriptions taken from ancient Babylonian cylinder seals. The seals date from 1900-1600 BC and the two clay impressions about 1 X 2" in size are in a recess inside the front cover of the clamshell box. A color insert shows for the first time in the recorded history of the private press how the production run of these impressions was accomplished by the Bird & Bull engineering staff in charge of reproduction of ancient artifacts; also included with this copy is a laid-in Appendix to "A History of Die Cutting" without which no copy of this title is complete; book and clamshell bound by the Campbell-Logan Bindery in identical light to medium brown cloth. . An old receipt for purchase of the book dated 1925 is loosely inserted. Johann Jacob Breitinger 1701-1776 Influential Swiss-German literary critic whose writings along with those of Johann Jacob Bodmer helped to inspire a transition from Baroque to Modern German Literature. In 1740 Breitinger published his "critische Dichtkunst" 2 vols a direct challenge to the classical viewpoint of leading Leipzig critic Johann Christoph Gottsched. Breitinger argued contrary to Gottsched that the poets passion should not be hindered by artificial rules i.e. rhym. The feud which ensued with Breitinger and Bodmer on the one side and Gottsched on the other helped to make way for writers such as Schlegel and Lessing. Breitinger followed up his 1740 work with further writings. In 1744 he anonymously published his "Verteidigung der schweizerischen Muse" a defense of Albrecht von Hallers nature poetry. They are entitled: Bicycling amidst Vanishing Victorians; Driving amidst Vanishing Victorians; Walking amidst Vanishing Victorians. The book itself has light surface wear to illustrated hardcover boards and a bookplate on inside front cover. It is profusely illustrated with BW photos by Loli Sergo and Dave Lacerda to name only a few and architectural line drawings by James Callaghan Art Hudson and Denise Dalton: this is the third printing of April 1975; 20.5 x 25.5cm. The details of this endeavor are impressive take for example this credit on illustrated endpaper following last page of index: "The ink renderings of archictectural Terra Cotta designs 'from the manufactory of Gladding; McBean & Co. Lincoln Placer County Cal.' were done for the divider pages by Paula Boghosian as were the drawings of the architectural details." Put in a new bookplate and this set makes an excellent collectible gift.
