Following the withdrawal of the two-volume second edition for fear of libel in 1857 the work was first issued as a single volume in Smith Elder's 'Cheap Edition' series later in the same year. In line with the convention of the period all the plates in each volume are placed together at the front since it was intended that the publisher's binding should be replaced on purchase by a house family or other 'style' binding. Accordingly each volume has the 'Directions to Binder' leaf indicating the proper position of each plate. De nombreuses illustrations ornent également les planches : personnages, titres et motifs décoratifs, fleurs, frises, paysages ... Au verso des planches, 8 portraits de personnalités réalisés à l'encre : Etienne Marcel, Bailly, Ledru-Rollin, Turgot, Talleyrand, Eugène Cavaignac, Daguerre et Niepce, ainsi que des symboles (fleur de lys) ou armoiries et blasons éxécutés à l'encre et à la gouache. Très intéressant ensemble, qui reflète une certaine diffusion sociale de la pratique photographique - au sein de l'élite bourgeoise - à la fin du XIXe siècle, en lien avec l'évolution des techniques, à la fois en ce qui concerne la prise de vue et les procédés de tirage. Equipés d'appareils d'utilisation de plus en plus aisée, de nombreux amateurs immortalisent alors, comme ici, les petits et grands moments de la vie de tous les jours, constituant albums de souvenirs et collections privées qui consacrent le rôle désormais essentiel de l'image dans la culture de la Belle Epoque. L'auteur de ces clichés, qui ne manquait ni d'humour ni de talent, a par ailleurs enrichi son travail artisanal d'autres éléments esthétiques : décors et ornements graphiques issus de l'univers du livre (imitant fleurons,bandeaux, culs-de-lampe, séparations de chapitres...), dessins "classiques" (paysages, portraits), inspirés du mouvement Art Nouveau (fleurs, vignette "japonisante") ou influencés par la presse et l'affiche (typographie fantaisiste, caricatures,...).

Burgundy leather fine binding with 2 thick gilt frames and large diagonal gilt title on the front cover gilt frames on the back cover. gilt lines on the cover edges and tiny little gilt flowers on the inner turn-ins. 5 raised bands to the spine with gilt title in the second compartment and gilt flower motifs and corner pieces in the other compartments. All pages edged with thick bright gilt. On thick cream paper the texts are printed in a red border on each page with titles at the head of each page in large ornate font and vignettes and red initial capitals at the start of each chapter. Condition near fine front hinge repaired else fine contents very clean a very attractive book. I could not find another copy of this book for sale at this time nor much information about the author J.M.S. Brooke though there is this copy of a letter he wrote to the editor of The Times in 1888 "Sir -- Paying my daily visit to my church this afternoon I was surprised to find the caretaker in a semi-stupified state. Asking her what was the matter she told me that a man had just entered the church and finding her all alone inquired whether I was in the vestry. On receiving a reply in the negative he said "I see you are alone" and immediately took out a pocket-handkerchief and dashed it in her face. The strong smell of whatever liquid it had been steeped in dazed and stupefied her and she for a moment or two lost her consciousness. The noise of some of the workmen on the roof seemed to have alarmed this scoundrel and he bolted out of the church. This incident Sir perhaps might afford a clue. At any rate it will warn solitary women who are in charge of churches. I am Sir your obedient servant J. M. S. BROOKE. Dedicated to Warren Hastings late Governor General of Bengal Hamilton's first novel appeared in 1796 to considerable acclaim. It satirises society through the device of Oriental letters on the model of works by Montesquieu and Goldsmith its theme being that women also can be both strong and able. The Preface based partly on her brother's experiences in India is both extensive and erudite. Elizabeth Hamilton 1758-1816 Irish novelist essayist and poet. Born in Belfast she moved as a child to Stirling later to London and finally to Edinburgh in 1804. She directed all her works to her own sex whose qualities of mind she admired and promoted. She was praised by Maria Edgeworth and famously by Jane Austen who was pleased that such 'a respectable writer' had read Sense and Sensibility. Block p.96; Todd p.147. See CBEL III p.398.
