Choice author signature and inscription in black ink on front flyleaf: "wish best wishes for / E. Clifford Toren -- / Stuart David Engstrand / Feb 15 1940." Affixed at top of front pastedown is a heavy card stock 32mo trifold announcement featuring Engstrand's portrait on the front and a printed invitation to a lecture by Engstrand about Bishop Hill same date as this inscription to be given at the Swedish-founded institution of North Park College in Chicago. In original forest green cloth with bright gilt titles and decoration on front and spine. Very clean with slight wear to some extremities faint wrinkling to cloth at upper corner one whitish dot on front. Tight solid and square binding. Top edge gilt. Rough cut on fore-edge and lower edge. Former owner bookplate on pastedown. Tissue guarded frontis red letters on tissue. Bindings very good and strong with just a little rubbing. Leather to a few volumes very slightly scuffed/damaged. Contents clean and tight a little toning to the reverse of the frontispiece plates otherwise unmarked no inscriptions or annotation. Each volume bears the bookplate from Durdans and initials A.R. Archibald Philip Primrose 5th Earl of Rosebery 1st Earl of Midlothian. An ornate uniform set exquisitely bound with an interesting provenance.
