191434742London: Macmillan 1914. One-hundred and sixty-eighth thousand. With 42 illustrations by Tenniel. 8vo original green cloth lettered in black on the spine and cover and with pictorial decoration of Alice in black and red on the upper cover. xii 187 1 pp. A very pleasing copy bright and clean. The Alice books have proven themselves to be among the most enduring classics of literature--for children or adults. ALICE’s importance might be gauged by the fact that it is one of only three books written for children five if one includes Aesop's Fables and Froebel's “Mutter- und Kose-Leider†included in the "Printing and the Mind of Man" exhibition.
ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND and its sequel THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS are "unique among 'juveniles' in appealing equally--if not more strongly --to adults. Written by an Oxford don a clergyman and a professional mathematician they abound in characters--the White Knight the Red Queen the Mad Hatter Humpty Dumpty--who are a part of everybody's mental furniture. And the philosophic profundity of scores if not hundreds of these characters' observations long household words wherever English is spoken gains mightily from the delicious fantasy of their setting" PMM 354.
Tenniel's illustrations are some of the most charming to ever appear in children's literature. These are original to the Alice story and are reproduced here along with the text-block essentially just as those in the first edition. Macmillan hardcover

1954119992London: Allan Wingate. Good in Fair dust jacket. 1954. First Edition Thus; First Printing. Hardcover. This is the First UK HARDBACK printing published by Allan Wingate London in 1954. This was the first UK printing of the book in hardback as opposed to the soft covered edition printed earlier in 1946 by Zephyr Books Stockholm & London which was the first edition illustrated by Peake in the english language. This Hardback BOOK is in blue cloth with gilt titling/gilt illustration to the spine with a little dulling to the gilt on the spine and some light edge fading to the covers but overall near VG tight clean and sound. The DUST-JACKET is only in a fair condition with some loss some fading marks creasing and sunning to the spine. However the d/j is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks a little better and the Mervyn Peake d/j artwork is striking so nice to have it in some form even in a poor version. The page fore-edges are very lightly toned but uniform. Internally some VERY light offsetting to the endpapers but the text block is overall very clean and tight but page183/4 has been folded over for a long time I would guess and has a crease line running down the pages and some 'invisible' archive tape over a tear at the bottom margin/inner gutter of the page but not affecting the text otherwise NO Inscriptions or other marks I can see. viii 264 pp. A full page b/w frontispiece - 65 illustrations in total throughout - all by Mervyn Peake including a vignette in red on the title page. A Very Scarce title. SEE IMAGES. ; 8vo 7.5" - 8" tall. . Allan Wingate hardcover

189810774Macmillan and Co. Limited. London. 1898. FIRST SIXPENNY EDITIONS. 8vo. 8.4 x 6 inches. Both volumes are the first printings of the Macmillan sixpenny series. Illustrated with forty two and fifty line illustrations respectively by John Tenniel. Publishers original red printed paper wraps. Page edges a bit chipped as to be expected with the cheap paper used in production and a little toned but overall these are very good internally. The front paper wraps for both volumes and only the rear for Alice are present. Both paper spines have perished. Ink stamp of previous owner to the front wrapper of each volume. While not the most attractive example these two First printings of the sixpenny series are a rare survivor with their original fragile wraps and not in too bad condition for 1898 paperback Children's books.
