With a four-page catalogue of books printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis to the rear of Volume I. In full calf bindings. Externally generally smart with a little rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Half of the spine label to Volume I is detached but intact and kept inside the front of Volume I for safe-keeping. Small loss of leather to the head of the spine of Volume II. A mid-eighteenth-century edition of a complete translation of Juvenal's satires by various hands and a complete translation of Persius done by poet John Dryden 1631-1700 alone. Dryden moreover provided a substantial preface the 'Discourse concerning the original and progress of satire' in which he presented a history of the genre a critique of its principal Latin practitioners and reflections on its modern use.
