Contemporary tree calf bordered in gilt with gilt decoration to spine maroon and black leather title labels; marbled endpapers. Lightly worn at edges and spine with each volume having the 18th century bookplate of A Walker Newry at front. Small chip and start of plit in letaher at top of front hinge and light toning to preliminaries; some offsetting from engraved title to previous blank fly leaf slightly rough eadges to engraved title of Vol III. Beautifully figured tree calf. These three volumes represent the poetical works of John Dryden 1631-1700 and are numbered 40 41 and 42 on the spine gilt worn. Dryden was a poet and dramatist who dominated literary life in the latter half of the 17th century becoming Poet Laureate in 1670. A most attractive little set. Bells Poets published in the 18th century consisted of the works of some 48 poets and totalled over one hundred volumes. Second Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. 1763004656London: J. And R. Tonson 1763. This is a Very Good Minus copy of a Later Printing containing his famous "Marriage A-La-Mode" and three others. Nice smooth calf binding with gilt ruling on the covers. Five raised bands on the spine with two red labels; titled and decorated in gilt with the date "1763" at the foot of the spine. Clean text lightly darkened; marbled endpapers with an armorial bookplate on the front paste-down from Dynes Hall an architecturally-listed building in Essex. Lovely engraved plates for each play. The pagination is quite erratic: unpaginated until 33 after 96 it skips a bit eventually reaching 455. The front hinge is cracked holding but tender and one of the spine labels has a chip. Leaves darkened with creasing throughout alongside scattered spots and foxing particularly at the extremities. Ink ownership marking to the the front pastedown and first free endpaper. Early reprint of this 17th century English play which may have been written by Bacon. It is significant that Bacon is not mentioned in the trial of Essex. The part that Bacon took in the trial was much noted by the public of that time and had Banks really written the play it is scarcely possible that he would have omitted Bacon. Full leather binding with five raised bands gilt decorations and titling on the spine. Clean text; marbled endpapers 370 pages with a Dedication using 105 of those. Distinguished by 42 spectacular illustrations. Rubbed at the margins covers cracked at the spine; the spine rubbing rather extensive. Pages 171-190 are present but have come loose. Please note the condition issues; Quercus must offer this as aBinding Copy in need of repairs or restoration. A nice rebind would make this a spectacular addition. Later Printing. Full-Leather.
