An exceptional and exceptionally large "large paper" copy. This copy is complete with the engraved frontispiece the extra plate depicting Vergil reading the Aeneid to Augustus and all 101 of the magnificent engraved plates by W. Hollar called for in this edition: ten in the Bucolics twenty in the Georgics and seventy-one in the Aeneid. Bound in 17th-century paneled calf very nicely rebacked in the 18th-century. The spine is separated into eight compartments ruled and tooled in gold by raised bands. There are two spine labels one in red and one in green morocco tooled in gold. The boards are framed by a single gold fillet.Internally this copy is in superb condition with very little of the browning associated with this edition. The great majority of leaves are crisp lily-white and wide margined. In fact this is the largest and cleanest copy that we have had the pleasure to handle. There are a few incidental marginal tears only one of which –now mended- enters an engraving opposite p. 261. The final leaf is ink-stained. "Dryden's 'translation of Vergil'" says Pope whose own translation of Homer was inspired by Dryden's work "is the most noble and spirited translation I know in any language." Thomas "The book was published by subscription a system of joint-stock patronage now coming into vogue. . Dryden's correspondence with his publisher Tonson showed a good many bickerings during the publication. One cause of quarrel was Tonson's desire that the book should be dedicated to William III. Dryden honourably refused; but Tonson had the engravings adapted for the purpose by giving to Aeneas the hooked nose of William Dryden Letter to his son 3 Sept. 1697." DNB"Shakespeare probably knew at least the earlier books of the 'Aeneid' in Latin while Milton's 'Paradise Lost' attempts to provide an English equivalent not only for Vergil's epic themes but even for his syntax diction and as far as possible meter. Designed and illustrated by costume and commercial designer Ernst Deutsch-Dryden. <br/><br/>The poster's illustration portrays well-dressed clientele watching a Western movie likely meant to represent a US import. During this period there was a push in Zurich as in all large European and American cities to build lavish new cinemas to accommodate the constantly growing public demand for films and elegant movie houses in which to view them. <br/><br/>27 x 39 inches. Also present are the Prologue and the Epilogue. The earliest copies lack these leaves but an unsigned leaf was inserted after A4 headed "Prologue to the OPERA Spoken by Mr. Betterton." H2 was cancelled and a new leaf headed H2v: The EPILOGUE. Spoken by Mrs. Bracegirdle the word FINIS being transferred from H2 to H2v. The text block shows some aging and light staining; it is finely bound in full crushed crimson morocco unsigned but reminiscent of Sangorski: Spine in six compartments with raised bands intricately tooled in gilt; gilt rules on the boards; gilt inner dentelles; endpapers of crimson Victorian cloth in a linen effect. Top edge gilt. The text has been bulked out with several pages of blank paper in the rear. A nice copy of the scarce first edition in a fine binding. Dryden's 'King Arthur' owes little to the Arthur of history of romance. The play centers around a battle with Oswald a Saxon leader which Arthur wins. He also wing the faire but blind Emmeline whose sight is restored by Merlin. The play was first performed at the Queen's Theatre with music by Purcell and marks the likely beginning of a rekindling of interest in King Arthur and other things monarchial after their suppression by Cromwell and the Commonwealth. There is also a poem 'To my Honoured Kinsman John Driden' verses addressed to the Duchess of Ormond and lines on 'A Fair Maiden lady who died at Bath' the wife of Lord Abingdon. The preface written in fine prose contains an excellent appreciation of Chaucer as well as attacks on Milbourne and Sir Richard Blackmore and a reply to Jeremy Collier's attack on the stage. Cassandra falls in love with Cleomenes and in the absence of Ptolemy confesses her passion to which Cleomenes does not respond. He is thereupon imprisoned and nearly starved. He and Cleanthes incite the Alexandrians to revolt but the attempt fails and Cleanthes and Cleomenes kill one another. <br /><br />"The additions which Dryden has made to the real story are chiefly the scene in which the Spartans are nearly starved the love of Cassandra for Cleomenes the whole character of Cleora and nearly the whole of Cleanthes" Genest.
