Boards lightly scuffed; spines now somewhat rubbed with raised bands and title labels in red and black leather showing minor marginal loss on volume 1. Headband to volume 1 lifting slightly. Endpapers and edges marbled with text remaining tight bright and clean. Provenance: bookplates of John & Helen Collins with 1872 prize label mounted to volume 1 pastedown. Armorial bookplate on the front paste-down. Rubbed at the margins; cracking at the spine but holding nicely. An attractive little 18th-century book. First Edition. Full-Leather. Some light spotting to first and final leaves of each volume. A light tobacco scent. Some rubbing and light marks to bindings; spines very slightly toned. Some gentle re-colouring to spines. Volume three with 20pp. publisher's catalog. Each volume with an engraved frontispiece engraved vignette title page and a regular title page illustrated. Dates are noted on the engravings from May 1798-Jan. 1799. Dryden was an English poet dramatist and literary critic who dominated the literary scene of his day. It became known as the Age of Dryden. He later did translations for publisher Jacob Tonson. The entire set which was issued by C. Cooke in the late 18th century was for the serious reader. The books were small enough to be kept in a coat pocket or lady's purse. Bound in full contemporary calf lettered and decorated in gilt labels mostly worn off early glue repair to upper joints not professionally but work fine light damp staining to the first few leaves of volume two.
