2010145713London: The Folio Society 2010. Hardcover. Fine. London The Folio Society 2010 first thus. Large octavo four volumes xx 513; x 585; x 546; and x 634 pages plus numerous full-page plates by David Rooney 'inspired by Greek and Roman portrait sculpture in most cases based on pieces firmly identified as the figures Plutarch describes'. Gilt-decorated cloth; small registration error in the blocking on the spine of Volume I; otherwise a fine set in the fine gilt-decorated slipcase. The text follows the 1859 edition edited by Arthur Hugh Clough; introduction by Tom Holland. 'For this edition of "Plutarch's Lives" the original pairings of Greek and Roman figures have been split and the biographies arranged in chronological order by period during which each figure flourished. The comparisons have been placed as appendices and are repeated in each relevant volume. Though not all of "Plutarch's Lives" have survived this rearrangement gives the best sense available to us of the historical sweep of the work.' 4 items. The Folio Society hardcover
