Maimbourg was a French Jesuit who is well known for his 1675 'Histoire des Croisades' in which is regarded to be the first use of the term "crusade".First published in French this faithful translation to English was done by Dryden under the request of Charles II. Dryden was England's first Poet Laureate an eminent poet critic translator and playwright who dominated the literary scene of Restoration England.Ink inscription of James Gisborne to the title page. In the original cloth binding. Externally worn. Rear board is held by one cord only. Front joint and hinge are strained. Rubbing to the leather. A small amount of loss of leather to the head and tail of the spine and to the front joint. Crack to the spine. Bumping to the extremities. Paste downs and endpapers are discoloured endpapers are edge worn. Internally binding is strained in places. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean.
