Uniformly bound in the original attractive marbled boards with green cloth spines stamped in shiny gold. Spines are still a pleasing green -- only very slightly sun-faded see photo -- much less than usual for this set which is often seen with spines sunned to an ugly brown. Each volume has long been protected by a homemade clear plastic dust jacket -- all of which have done their job well resulting in NO fraying and almost NO rubbing. PLEASE NOTE: Vertical white lines in the photos are light reflected from the clear plastic dust jackets NOTon the books themselves. There are faint shadows at the corners of the front free endpapers from tape adhesive offset minor -- see photo. Otherwise all pages are fresh crisp and unmarked -- uncut and unopened apparently never read. NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. Each volume measures 6.75" wide by 10.25" tall. This is number 457 of 750 standard sets another 50 having been being printed on Van Gelder paper. Each volume with an engraved frontispiece engraved vignette title page and a regular title page illustrated. Dates are noted on the engravings from May 1798-Jan. 1799. Dryden was an English poet dramatist and literary critic who dominated the literary scene of his day. It became known as the Age of Dryden. He later did translations for publisher Jacob Tonson. The entire set which was issued by C. Cooke in the late 18th century was for the serious reader. The books were small enough to be kept in a coat pocket or lady's purse. Bound in full contemporary calf lettered and decorated in gilt labels mostly worn off early glue repair to upper joints not professionally but works light damp staining to the first few leaves of volume two.
