Flushed with success they issued a medal Shaftesbury's head on the obverse the sun rising over the Tower of London on the reverse. It was the perfect prompt for Dryden's mock-heroic satire: "Of all our Antick Sights and Pageantry Which English Ideots run in crowds to see The Polish Medall bears the prize alone."</p> </p> . The last edition of Dryden's lifetime. The third edition of this work and the last edition of Dryden's lifetime. First published in 1682.Extracted from 'Miscellany Poems: In Two Parts' second edition 1692. ESTC no. R21069.Very scarce to find copies both separately bound such as this and of the originating work itself. Bound in a later half crushed morocco with decorative paper covered boards and gilt detailing. Bound with later blanks to the front and rear. This political satire serves as John Dryden's response to the Whigs' decision to strike a medal to celebrate the acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of high treason. A fierce attack the poem criticises the Whigs who supported Shaftesbury and was part of a public dispute that involved Thomas Shadwell's counter-poem 'The Medal of John Bayes'. Dryden was appointed England's first Poet Laureate and was a dominating literary figure of Restoration England so much to the point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Register like pagination runs continuous. Register for this work runs 6 K-L4 M2 as issued. Bound in a later half crushed morocco with decorative paper covered boards and gilt detailing. Externally very smart with rubbing to the spine head and tail. A minor mark to the front board. Illustrated bookplate to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. With significant toning to the last few pages of the poem and with scattered spots. With later inscribed notes made in pencil to the second blank to the rear.
