Contains all four volumes of Johnson's Life and his Tour. A charming illustrated edition of James Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson in 4 volumes and Journal of a Tour to the Herbrides. Published by the Office of the National Illustrated Library in 1851 and 1852 respectively. A complete set.In the publisher's original cloth with blind stamp detail. A frontispiece in each volume. All sixty illustrations in volume 1. All fifty-one illustrations in volume 2. A folding letter as well as fifty-two illustrations in volume 3. All forty-seven illustrations in volume 4 and all forty-six illustrations in Journal. Collated complete.Includes eight additional advertising pages at the end of vol.1 including specimen pages.Boswell first met Johnson at a bookshop as a young man and the two quickly became friends. Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides concerned the pair's much-loved tour of the Scottish Highlands and Western islands in 1773. First published in 1785 shortly after Johnson's death with much success.Inspired Boswell compiled his notes and what followed was Boswell's 4 volume The Life of Samuel Johnson often considered to be the greatest biography in the English language. Boswell approached his biography as a compelling narrative which works very well with illustrations as seen in this edition. In the publisher's original cloth with blind stamp detail. Externally smart. Slight fading to spines joints and extremities heavier to volume 1 and Tour spines and to front boards of volumes 1 and 4. Small signs of shelf wear to extremities and minor bumping to heads and tails of spine. Bumping heavier to Tour where cloth has slightly lifted. Cloth has slightly lifted to joint at front board of volume 1. Minimal marks with one small mark to spine of Tour and front board of volume 1. A faint line across boards of volume 1. End papers are generally bright and clean with volumes 1 2 and 3. Very minor spotting to extremities of rear end papers of volume 4. Heavy offsetting to end papers of Tour. Internally volumes 2-4 and Tour are firmly bound. Volume 1 is generally firmly bound with slight signs of wear between leaves pp.192-193 and pp.206-207. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot very rare in volume 1 and only final leaves of volume 2. Spotting heavier to leaves pp.83-93 of volume 4 and pp.33-45 of Journal.
