The spines are faded to an attractive brown colour from what was likely green. Vol 1: 522 pp Vol 2: 480 pp Vol 3: 464 pp Vol 4: 446 pp Vol 5: 460pp Vol 6: 324 pp. Complete with 4 frontispieces and 6 fold-outs all in very good condition. Minor offsetting from frontispieces. Minor but noticeable foxspotting to blocks and some pages edges. Clean throughout and with no markings annotations. Each volume is stamped "Bound by Zaehnsdorf" to lower edge of FFEP. Very good hinges and joints. Some edgewear present to boards and some minor bruising to corners. Volume 2 has a bent lower corner. Some minor nicks to the raised bands and a very small splatter of red paint to foot of volume one about the size of a match-head. An attractive set. Securely packed and shipped. With engraved frontispieces to each volume including a folding map to volume III. New edition with numerous additions and noted by John Wilson Croker. John Wilson Croker 1780-1857 was a politician and writer. In 1831 Croker published a new edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson including the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides which was vindictively attacked by Macaulay in the Edinburgh Review but which remained the best edition until superseded by the work of George Birkbeck Hill -DNB Complete in five volumes. In full calf bindings. Externally smart though with some rubbing to the extremities and a few marks. Loss to the spine labels. Three joints are starting with three hinges strained. Ink signatures to front pastedowns and front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with just some offsetting from the frontispieces and the occasional instance of foxing. Good John Murray hardcover

Watson has inserted an "Advertisement" at the front making excuses for Boswell: "In republishing a work which . has so long subjected its author to the sarcasms of foes or to the plaudits of friends it seems but the bounden duty of the American editor to suffer the author in this place to offer those vindications which he afterwards saw fit to annex to his 'Life of Johnson.'"<br/>An attractive copy in a contemporary American binding. This set contains the eight volumes complete of The Life of Samuel Johnson with both volumes of the 'Johnsoniana' that was added during publication. In original publishers cloth binding. bindings are generally tight and firm. Externally smart. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping with some discolouration and marks to the boards. The inner rear hinge is strained in volumes I and V and has failed in volume VI and needs repair allowed for in price. Internally the pages are generally bright with some occasional slight browning. There is the occasional spot becoming prominent to the first and last few pages. There is an ink signature on the title pages of volumes V to IX and on the half-title of volumes III and IV. A stunning set of Boswell's magnum opus a monumental and early English biography. Samuel Johnson most famous for compiling the English dictionary that would replace the Bailey dictionary and would later become the dictionary that Noah Webster would consult is a legendary author and man of letters. Here his biographer and diarist James Boswell relates his life work and correspondences in the ten volumes. The final two volumes include the anecdotes about Johnson from his contemporaries. A principal work in English biographical literature housed in a lovely binding. A Near Fine set with a few hints of wear to the extremities overall bright and beautiful.
