First edition in contemporary binding of Boswell's first major work - an account of his trip to Corsica and his meeting with General Pasquale Paoli leader of the Corsican independence movement. "With its reports of the gallant islanders and a Plutarchan depiction of Paoli paralleled with several classical heroes An Account of Corsica was an immediate success. The work was widely read and translated stimulated great interest in Paoli and the Corsican cause brought its author wide fame in Britain and Europe and found an interested readership among the Americans. It attracted the notice of the French government which had a translation made and though Boswell's ambition for British intervention was not to be fulfilled he probably influenced Britain's decision to send secret supplies of arms to the Corsicans" ODNB. With an engraved coat of arms on the title page and a large engraved folding map of Corsica. 2 parts in 1 volume. XII 2 384 pp. Second edition of a delightful and important travel book by James Boswell 1740-1795 best known as the friend and biographer of Samuel Johnson. His first major publication it includes a journal of his 1765 visit to the new Republic of Corsica which had declared its independence from the Republic of Genoa in 1755 as well as his memoires of the Republics founding father and president Pasquale Paoli 1725-1807. Boswells work made the new republic and its leader famous and helped give them legitimacy. It proved so popular that three more editions appeared before the end of 1768. It is divided into two parts the first giving a detailed description and history of Corsica and the second containing a journal of Boswell's voyage to and travels on the island. It was especially this latter part that excited the public being a lively account of Boswell's quixotic adventures in Corsica and his association with President Paoli. The large folding map newly made for Boswell's account by his servant Thomas Phinn and dated 1768 is one of the rare maps solely devoted to the island. The work was translated within a few years into Dutch German French and Italian. With the bookplate of John Measure mounted on the front pastedown. The edges and corners of the boards are very slightly scuffed the top outer corner of the front board is bumped. The leaves and plate are somewhat browned. Three volumes. xxxiv536;2605;573pp. plus two folding plates. Contemporary speckled calf spines gilt extra gilt green morocco lettering pieces. Occasional minor soiling narrow crack at toe of lower joint of 2nd volume narrow short worm track largely marginal but touching a few letters in 2Q of 2nd volume but a very good crisp set in a handsome contemporary binding. First Dublin edition set up from the first London edition and incorporating corrections to some of the errata but introducing other errors. Though undertaken for the same group of booksellers the task of printing was doled out to three separate printers with consequent variations in the imprint. An unusually nice set of this edition noted by Pottle as "cheaply and rather poorly printed evidently to undersell the genuine edition which must however have been nearly if not quite exhausted when it appeared. It is now listed by the booksellers as 'very rare' which is perhaps justified as there is no copy in the British Museum the Bodleian or the National Library of Scotland" - Pottle. As this edition predated the second London edition by almost a year its appearance had no doubt a considerably greater effect on the sales of that edition than it had on the first. Pottle's collation places the "Round Robin" plate as a frontis to the first volume; in this set it appears in company with the manuscript facsimile at the end of the third perchance as issued. Plates many with multiple images on the plate include besides castles and various antiquities 3 each of English coins and seals.

The work was issued in 100 parts apparently in rather random sequence. Gatherings are unsigned throughout and in this volume part numbering ceases after part 70. However the instructions to the binder at the tail of the last index page makes suggestions for creating order and these have mostly been followed though the Cambridgshire map is found late in the volume opposite the "Description of Cambridge Castle" rather than opposite the descriptive text for the County in part 31. Maps are by Thomas Kitchin and first appeared in the London Magazine from 1747-1760 except the Yorkshire map which is by T. Conder 1784. See Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection Leeds 1947 p53. First Malone edition 4 volumes 8vo pp. xxxi 1 452; 2 490; 2 475; 2 514; engraved frontispiece portrait by Baker after Reynolds folding engraved facsimile of Johnson's handwriting folding engraved Round Robin plate; labels gone on all but the last volume but generally a very good sound copy in contemporary full calf. The second edition was something of a botched effort by Boswell and the result was a book "painfully at variance with his own standards of ordered arrangement" although much new important material was added.
