Beautifully preserved and presented. A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS IN THE LANGUAGE VERY HANDSOMELY BOUND AND FULLY ILLUSTRATED. Celebrated for its intimacy and vividness Boswell's Life of Johnson "is one of the best books in the world. It is assuredly a great very great work. Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic Poets--Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of Dramatists--Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of Orators than Boswell is the first of Biographers." Macauley in the Edinburgh Review 1831. Boswell learned a great deal about the art of biography from his subject and brought to his task boundless curiosity persistence and zest.
Boswell had been collecting material for this work since his first interview with Johnson in 1763 and was confident that his kind of biography "which gives not only a History of Johnson's visible progress through the world and of his publications but a view of his mind in his letters and conversations is the most perfect that can be conceived and will be more of a Life than any work that has ever yet appeared." He said too that: “A sanction to my faculty of giving a just representation of Dr. Johnson I could not conceal. Nor will I suppress my satisfaction in the consciousness that by recording so considerable a portion of the wit and wisdom of the brightest ornament of the eigteenth century I have largely provided for the instruction and entertainment of mankind.†If Boswell does indulge in a little harmless flattery to himself the concluding words of his preface are literally true for Boswell’s Johnson as much as any other book “has largely provided for the instruction and entertainment of mankind.â€
Only 1750 copies of the first edition were printed. Boswell's Life of Johnson remains the most famous biography in any language one of Western literature's most germinal achievements: unprecedented in its time in its depth of research and its extensive use of private correspondence and recorded conversation it sought to dramatize its subject in his authorial greatness.to the task of life writing Boswell brought his forensic and evidence-sifting habits from his Edinburgh legal training. But though Boswell's work has delighted many.it remains.as controversial as it is famous. It has been attacked by. some Johnsonian scholars.Nonetheless later scholarship has properly supplemented but never supplanted Life's basic vision and has drawn upon Boswell's work as a central source even in those challenges to aspects of its representation" Oxford DNB.
Printed by John Chambers, For R. Boswell was and remains a divisive personality even for modern readers who find the fluent precise demotic prose of the journals compelling: an unstable amalgam of vibrant self-advertising vanity and self-tortured insecurity; an able but reluctant Edinburgh lawyer who marred his chances for judicial promotion with over-zealous and occasionally frenetic defences of poor criminal clients with whom he felt a particular sympathy; a loving but erratic husband; a lenient beloved but overburdened father; a kind and improvement-oriented lowland laird who longed for life in London; a sentimental Jacobite who developed an extraordinary veneration for George III.

Charles Dilly hardcover

1952SET31-G-3London : Clarendon Press 1952-1957. Vellum. Fine. 10.5" x 7.5". None. Five volumes of the Yale Editions of the private papers of James Boswell all de luxe limited editions from the Selbourne collection. The volumes present are: Boswell in Holland; Boswell on the Grand Tour Germany and Switzerland; Boswell on the Grand Tour Italy Corsica and France; Boswell in Search of a Wife; Boswell's London Journal 1762-1763 Together With Journal Of My Jaunt Harvest 1762. All volumes were edited by Frank Pottle. In the case of Boswell on the Grand Tour Italy Corsica and France and Boswell in Search of a Wife Frank Brady was an additional editor. Pottle is the widely acknowledged authority on Boswell and his biography of the man is still considered the standard reference work. In 1929 he was engaged as the editor of Boswell's papers the originals of which were all in the possession of the American collector Lt. Col. Ralph Heyward Isham. This editorship became the central project of his life and these Yale Editions were the result. The project was one of the largest and most celebrated works of scholarly editorship in modern times. Yale itself explains: "The first volume of the Trade Edition the London Journal 17621763 appeared in 1950 and surprising both its publishers at McGraw-Hill and Heinemann and its scholarly editors became an immediate worldwide bestseller. The publication of the popular series was completed in 1989 with Boswell the Great Biographer 17891795 the thirteenth volume of the journals. Boswell's frank record of his private and public lifehe was as forthright about his wretched behavior as he was matter-of-fact in reporting his more admirable momentshas repelled some readers and attracted others but rarely has it elicited indifference." Boswell in Holland is number 512 of 1050 printed; Boswell on the Grand Tour Germany and Switzerland is number 559 of 1000 printed. ; Boswell on the Grand Tour Italy Corsica and France is number 323 of 400 printed; Boswell in Search of a Wife is number 327 of 400 printed; Boswell's London Journal is number 559 out of 1050 printed. Boswell's London journal records how he visited London for the second time at the age of 22. It notably records his first meeting with Samuel Johnson for whose biography he is best known. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD 1906-1973 a noted book collector and diarist. In quarter vellum with cloth covered boards. There is a gilt motif to the front boards and spine labels to the spines. Externally lovely. In the original cellophane wraps and with the original rigid slipcases. The cellophane wraps are still smart; for the two Grand Tour volumes they are a little chipped and creased along the edges and in the case of the Germany & Switzerland volume a little age-toned. The Italy Corsica & France volume has a closed tear midway down the spine. The slipcases are intact with a little wear to the extremities only. Internally clean and bright and firmly bound. Many pages uncut along the foredge throughout. The edges are untrimmed but clean. NEAR FINE slipcase Fine Clarendon Press hardcover
