He was one of the earliest teachers of political economy in the U. S. taught while he was Professor of Moral Philosophy at Columbia which he held from 1817 until 1857. In 1857 when Columbia brought in Francis Leiber to teach political economy McVickar was transferred to the Chair of Evidences of Natural and Revealed Religion a position he held until his retirement in 1864. From 1844 until 1864 he was also Army Chaplain at Fort Columbus in New York. He is also recalled as one of the founders of St. Stephen's College for Episcopal clergyman. He was the author of several works including the revised and greatly extended "Britannica" article by McCulloch "Outline of Political Economy "1825 "Hints on Banking"1827; and several others on finance and banking and a biography of Henry Hobart. A fine fresh handsome set bound by Bayntun naturally and yes the binding is signed in 3/4 deep navy morocco and blue cloth with raised bands gilt compartments and spine titles marbled endpapers and top edge gilt. Slightest rubbing to extremities but a very nice set. Supremely attractive set of this well-illustrated edition of perhaps the greatest biography ever written. A contemporary inscription on a front blank in volume I notes how scarce the book was in the open market even within a year of publication and how lucky he was to have been able to buy it. A very smart four volume leather set of James Boswell's famous biography of the life and work of Samuel Johnson This classic work was a huge critical success and is a significant landmark in the development of genre of biography. James Boswell was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1740. A successful diarist and biographer he is best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson. Samuel Johnson was a poet essayist literary critic and lexicographer. Born in 1709 Johnson was a committed Tory and a devout Anglican. Frontispiece to volume I by Sir Joshua Reynold engraved by E Mitchell. Previous owners bookplate to each volume reads 'Abraham Bower'. In half leather binding. Externally very smart. Minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Small amount of loss to the head of volume III. Rubbing to the extremities and to the front and rear boards of each volume.
