183523141London: John Murray 1835. 8vo 10 volumes engraved frontispiece and title-p. in each volume all by Stanfield after Finden original blindstamped brown cloth gilt lettering direct and within blindstamped labels; vol. 1 2 and 10 neatly rebacked; the binding was a dainty one from the start and needs care in handling but the overall appearance is generally very good. This set with the 1835 ownership signature of Charles Kelsall who has penned 14 lines of commentary in vol. 1 and 69 lines in vol. 2 on endpapers and flyleaf all in praise of the good Dr. Johnson. Croker's second edition which was anonymously edited by John Wright. The original Croker edition 1831 in 5 vols. 8vo still stands as a monument of Johnsonian scholarship; but it was badly edited much and famously condemned by Macaulay. Seeing the problem Murray hastily engaged Wright to do a make-over and republished it in 1835. These 1835 plates were later stereotyped and many editions followed those after 1853 under the Bohn imprint to whom Murray had sold the plates. "No matter what the title-pages may say all Crokers in ten volumes small octavo often described as duodecimo are so far as the text is concerned one and the same thing. The ninth edition edited by Alexander Chalmers with additional notes which Pottle describes as "not extensive but.solid and useful." Although we believe that the third represents the form in which Boswell would ultimately have arranged the supplementary material we can never be sure of it for this edition was the last actually published in his lifetime. There were also many pleasant and characteristic sentences introduced in this edition which naturally dropped out when the text was shaken together by Malone" Pottle 81. Volume I includes the inserted leaf of "additional corrections" C3. Contemporary calf boards nicely rebacked in the nineteenth century with new leather spines with red labels and decoration in gilt. Boards heavily worn at the corners bindings tight text quite clean. One page of early owner's notes in pencil bound in at the beginning of the first volume. Portrait. Facsimile and plate. 19th century ink name "Walter Fletcher" on endsheets and effaced from margin of titles edges rubbed endsheets creased some soiling to verso of portrait clean tear in R4 vol. I with no loss some occasional pencil annotations. but a sound set. First edition uncorrected state of I:135:10 'gve' with the complement of cancels outlined by Pottle as usual. In volume two pages 78 92 275 and 352 are in their first uncorrected states. Frequently remarked upon as one of the triumphs of the art of biography in the English language. Each volume bears the bookplate of Jonathan Boucher 1737-1804 Anglican clergyman and for a period beginning in 1759 a prominent figure in the colonies and intimate of George Washington. However his staunch loyalist sympathies caused him to return to England in 1775 where he occupied himself with various matters including for fourteen years an unfinished "Glossary of Archaic and Provincial Words" intended to supplement Johnson's Dictionary. After his death a preliminary section was published but the remainder of his work was turned over to the proprietors of Webster's English Dictionary. ROTHSCHILD 463. POTTLE 79.
