A complete set of ten small hardcover books handsomely bound in full golden-brown leather with gilt-decorated spines gilt top edges gilt dentelles marbled endpapers and five raised spine bands each. Very good condition overall. A crack is just starting to form from the top down on the front edge of volume 1's spine; board remains securely attached. Edges and spine bands lightly rubbed due to normal handling; heads of a few spines are mildly chipped barely affecting the overall silhouette of the spine. Horizontal slit across the front board of volume 5. However the exteriors remain quite nice for shelf display and the gilt detailing is still distinct. Scattered foxing mostly on the plates but pages are predominantly clean and text is unmarked by previous owners. Binding is tight across the set. Sturdy and attractive copy of this classic work! Due to a binder's error volume 6 is mistakenly labeled as volume 5 thus there are two volumes labeled as volume 5. Each volume measures approx. 6.75" x 4.5" and is illustrated with several black and white plates. This copy contains the bookplate of Massachusetts congressman John E. Russell 1834-1903.
