La pièce connut un certain succès lors de sa première représentation en 1789 une année marquée par l'agitation sociale qui allait conduire à la Révolution française. Ce type de comédie musicale qui mettait en scène des personnages du peuple résonnait particulièrement dans un contexte de montée des tensions sociales. Michel-Jean Sedaine aussi connu sous le pseudonyme "M. Marsollier des Vivetières" était un auteur prolifique du XVIIIe siècle célèbre pour ses livrets d'opéras-comiques et ses comédies. Il a travaillé avec de nombreux compositeurs et ses textes se distinguent souvent par un ton léger et sentimental. Dalayrac était un compositeur populaire de l'opéra-comique avec une production importante et variée. Il a collaboré avec Marsollier sur plusieurs uvres et "Les Deux Petits Savoyards" est l'une de leurs collaborations les plus connues.
