Red boards with stamped lettering on front ocver white spine lettering; color illustrated dust jacket with white lettering; 142 pp; profuse color illustrations map and portraits. "Acclaimed by some as one of the best portraitists of all time Italian painter Giovan Battista Moroni 1522-1579 created penetrating images of the aristocracy of Bergamo in which the sitters often gaze at the spectator with an unflinching directness. Admired in Italy since the 16th century when Titian is said to have praised his portraits Moroni did not achieve an international reputation until the 19th century and remains relatively little known. This handsome catalog encompasses Moroni's entire career. It includes portraits of all formats and styles demonstrating not just Moroni's brilliance at capturing the elegance of his sitters and the fashions of the time but also his "realistic" representation of Bergamo's society which became a model for Caravaggio. The volume also includes Moroni's religious paintings which also incorporate highly accomplished likenesses of their patrons once again showing the striking psychological insight for which Moroni is acclaimed."--Publisher's description. Contents include: Giovanni Battista Moroni : history and critical fortune / Simone Facchinetti and Arturo Galansino -- Moroni's teacher : Moretto -- Early works -- Aristocratic portraits -- Portraits from nature -- Altarpieces -- Late portraits -- Catalogue entries. VG. light rubbing & creasing to corners. back cover scuffed. lower textblock shelf-worn & lightly stained; does not appear to affect pgs. blue & red wraps w/ illustration & white printing. book xiv 377 pgs w/ 10 plates of illustrations. Text in German. The thermal baths as a building type spread very early in the provinces of the Roman Empire and were available not only to the Roman population but also to the local population. Magnificent thermal baths here had the task of promoting the power of the Roman Empire and the associated urban standard of living. When building a thermal bath architecture technology and decor should make meaningful reference to each other in the planning and execution of the building and should be coordinated accordingly. In addition to simple standardization however many thermal baths show obvious deviations in terms of architecture and technology as well as decorative equipment; the latter occupies the most important place in this work. The intention of the client - whether a private individual a community or the ruler himself - was to design the 'raw type of bathroom in such a way that later a uniform and harmonious whole was obtained. Mosaics could be used very differently in thermal baths. They were laid on the floor adorned bathing pools and piscines and found their place - albeit less often - on walls and ceilings or vaults. They primarily fulfill a practical function namely by covering the surface with a waterproof and decorative layer of jewelry. In addition they should also please the eye of the beholder with their decorative image. One encounters both monochrome and bichrome mosaics as well as polychrome tesselates or mosaics with beautiful ornamentation or figurative decor.--translated from Amazon.
