Books I to III are the second edition which had already appeared in 1590. Books IV to VI were printed for the first time in 1596. The fragment of Book VII is from the folio edition of 1609. The Letter written to Sir Walter Raleigh and the verses addressed to and by Spenser are from the edition of 1590. The sixteenth century was the golden age of English poetry. Edmund Spenser burned to create an English equivalent to Virgil’s Aeneid. Instead of lauding the Caesars he would glorify Elizabeth the Virgin Queen. Where Virgil connected Rome to the heroic past of Troy Spenser would forge a link between Tudor England and the mythological age of King Arthur. The result was The Faerie Queene a rich allegory which elevated Protestant virtues through the medium of a romantic chivalric epic. Today the power of Spenser’s story and the beauty of his verse still live in ‘famous memory’. London, Cambridge University Press, 1909 Limited Numbered Edition 10/350. hardcover

195310384
The Heritage Press New York 1953. First edition 'thus'. HC VG. Beautiful pictoral cover in peach tan and green. Clean copy throughout. Introduction by John Hayward. Decorations drawn by John Austen. Illustrations engraved in wood by Agnes Miller Parker. The original work was first published in two parts in 1590 and 1596. The Heritage Press New York: In the year of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Of note: "Edmund Spenser originally intended for The Faerie Queene to be a massive epic poem with twelve books each focused on a different moral virtue. However he only managed to complete and publish the first six books before his death in 1599." Therefore the presence of a "First book" through "The Seventh book" in this edition means this is the complete surviving work as written by Spenser. The overall plan for twelve books was never fulfilled.
The Heritage Press hardcover
