Hardback, 444 p., 318 b/w ill., 230 x 315 mm. ISBN 02010174. Languages : French.

The first published work of John Gincano, a virtually unknown master of foreboding expressionistic woodcuts. Executed at the advent of the Great Depression (the zenith of the Expressionist era), these grim woodcuts compare with the best work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Vasily Kandinsky, and Emile Nolde. As Willy Pogany states in his preface, 'Gincano's delightful woodcuts not only illustrate Schlemihl's peregrinations, but describe a life partly his own. They illuminate this charming satirical romance and are fully imbued with the whimsical spirit of the book, rendered as they are with masterful simplicity and telling originality. The idea of illustrating 'Peter Schlemihl' with woodcuts is a very fortunate one, as it not only suggests the period when Chamisso wrote this immortal fantasy, but somehow by its very nature of strong contrasts in Black and White constantly brings to mind the lost 'shadow'. Binding tight and contents clean. Hardbound. Very Good. NW70

Mrs. Caudle, the most persistent bed nag ever born, had a remarkable talent for turning molehills into mountains. Mr. Caudle is reduced to the occasional rejoinder and feigning sleep when he can bear it no longer. Douglas William Jerrold (1803-1857) was an English dramatist and writer. He perhaps better known from his reputation as a brilliant wit in conversation than from his writings. As a dramatist he was very popular. He dealt with rather humbler forms of social world than had commonly been represented in the theater. He was one of the first and certainly one of the most successful of the men who in defense of the native English drama endeavored to stem the tide of translation from the French, which threatened early in the 19th century to drown original native talent. His skill in construction and his mastery of epigram and brilliant dialogue are well exemplified in his comedy, 'Time Works Wonders'. The tales and sketches which form the bulk of Jerrold's collected works vary much in skill and interest; but, although there are evident traces of their having been composed from week to week, they are always marked by keen satirical observation and pungent wit. Scarce and interesting. NW51

Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, (1803-1873) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and politician. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of bestselling novels which earned him a considerable fortune. He coined the phrases 'the great unwashed', 'pursuit of the almighty dollar', 'the pen is mightier than the sword', 'dweller on the threshold', and the well-known and much-parodied opening line 'It was a dark and stormy night'. After his death, Bulwer-Lytton suffered a tremendous decline in reputation and today is best known for the 'dark and stormy night' line and the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, to determine the opening sentence of the worst of all possible novels.**PRICE JUST REDUCED!
