Cincinnati born Henry Thew Stephenson (1870-1957) was a teacher and writer. He attended Woodward High School before gaining degrees from Ohio State University, Harvard University and Indiana University. He studied for a year doing research at the British Museum. He was an Associate Professor of English in Indiana University in 1919. Stephenson published a number of fiction and non-fiction books whilst teaching English. Charles Mark Relyea (1863-1932) was an American illustrator whose work appeared in magazines and popular novels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. NW62

Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (1771-1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, poet and historian. Many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Bookplate of 'H.P. Belknap' on inside pastedown. Horace Preston Belknap (1856-1936) was an American pioneer doctor, businessman, and a state legislator from Oregon. Belknap was one of the first physicians to establish a medical practice in Central Oregon. He also served three terms in the Oregon House of Representatives as a Republican legislator, representing a large and rural district in central and southern Oregon. Also a manuscript ownership of 'C.W. Thomson' on flyleaf. Presumably this was Charles West Thomson (1798-1879), poet, author, reformer, and Protestant Episcopal clergyman from Philadelphia PA. NW51

Contents clean but the leaves are brittle. Hardbound. Very Good. Wilhelm Ruland (1869-1927) was a German writer who was born in Bonn and died in Munich. He studied literary history and newer languages; He completed his studies in 1896 at the University of Rostock with a doctorate in philosophy. He then worked as a tutor, at times also as a Prinzenerzieher, in Bavaria, Austria and Italy. From 1898 to 1902 he was editor and publisher director in Leipzig. He made extensive trips to the Middle East and finally settled in Munich. There he belonged to the editors of the Munich Neue Nachrichten, and lived there as a freelance writer. NW62

Literary Guild of America was a mail order book club that sold lower cost, but well produced editions, of popular and current books to its members. Books were selected by an editorial board, whose chairman was Carl Van Doren (1885-1950) a famed and respected American critic, historian, and biographer. James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) was an American writer, poet, and best-selling author. During his lifetime he was known as the 'Hoosier Poet' and 'Children's Poet' for his dialect works and his children's poetry respectively. His poems tended to be humorous or sentimental, and of the approximately one thousand poems that Riley authored, the majority are in dialect. His famous works include 'Little Orphan Annie' and 'The Raggedy Man'. Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952)was an American artist and illustrator, famous for the 'Christy Girl' -a colorful and illustrious successor to the 'Gibson Girl' -who became the most popular portrait painter of the Jazz Age era.
