A very attractive edition of this little book 4" x 3" with an ivory or ivorine binding with a carved decorative front in an oval surround in good condition. LACKING the central section of the metal clasp. All page edges brightly gilt. A Chromolithographic frontispiece & a similar Chromo decorated title page separated by a tissue guard followed by a red and black Printed title page. Silk effect endpapers slightly marked. Inner hinges look to have been reglued at some point. FRENCH TEXT only. Overall good tight and clean. A translation page giving the copyright to Pellionet Marchet is dated 1867 but I am unsure if this is the date of the book or this is a little later The Tables des Fetes Mobile shows date starting 1886 and ending 1897 - so I would assume this may be 1886 . 187822057Wm. Le Baron Jr. - Chicago 1878. Good/No Dust Jacket. This is an original 1878 printing with leather binding. The book is complete with 667 pages including the Color MAP. The date 1878 is shown at the bottom of the title page. The pages are nice and clean and unmarked and the binding is strong and solid. The leather along the spine and the corners shows pretty heavy rubbing and quite a bit of wear but the binding is still nice and strong and the covers are firmly attached. The front cover has gold designs and states The History of Woodford County Illinois 1878. The gold text on the spine is a little faded but still readable. Cadell & Davies publishers of David Collin's "An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales" advertise the issue of the rare 1802 second volume in their July 1st 1802 Publishers list. It is listed as Item 3: "A Second volume of an Account of the English Colony in New South Wales comprising the Transactions of the Settlement for Four Years subsequent to the former Account; and containing some interesting Particulars of the Discovery of Bass Strait and further Observations on the Customs and Manners of the Natives of New Holland by Lieutenant-Colonel Collins author of the former Volume. Handsomely printed in Quarto with a Map and other Engravings of Views Natural./ History & c." The second volume is extremely rare and important in that it included information from George Bass's & Matthew Flinder's account of the discovery of Bass Strait and the circumnavigation of Tasmania. Bass's journal was subsequently lost. <br /> <br /> Collins wrote the first official account of New South Wales. Because of Collin's position of authority Collins went to Botany Bay originally as judge-advocate but also served as secretary to Gov. Phillip this work is considered a trustworthy view of colonial Australia. One of the foundation works on early Australia. <br /> <br /> Pamphlet 8vo 4pp. A total of 30 publications are listed. Baker OCLC records just a single copy at Cambridge. This copy lacks the Middlesex map which looks to be inserted later in this copy so perhaps a binders error.
