1854P2946Paris: Pierre-Bertrand c.1854. Very Good. Notes: In 1846 the French government decided to send a mission to Persia an expedition led by the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell to carry out further investigations. Laurens a young artist who had studied in the studio of the painter Paul Delaroche was employed to record the course of their journey in a series of images that after his return in 1849 were used to illustrate Hommaire de Hell's Voyage en Turquie et en Perse 4 vols and atlas 1854-60. Despite the rigours of the journey and an attack of fever Laurens filled several sketch-books with his drawings of the people and landscapes they encountered. Fine. Aux dépens de la Congrégation de l'Index à Rome Rome Paris 1768 10 x 15.50 cm deux parties en un volume relié The first edition appeared in 1763 at the same address under the title: L'arretin ou la débauche de l'esprit en fait de bon sens. Contemporary full citron morocco binding. Smooth spine decorated. Green morocco title-label. Triple fillet frame on covers. Edges gilt. Handsome copy. Upper joint lightly rubbed. L'arretin consists of 25 essays and tales on subjects as diverse as Les nègres L'agriculture La chasteté ou le célibat Histoire de maître Pierre etc. These are all violent critiques sometimes direct sometimes satirical or allegorical of Biblical teaching the church and its history. Abbé Du Laurens 1719-1793 was a polemical and anti-religious writer whose works are all libertine and licentious but above all profoundly anti-religious. The author did not hesitate to descend to the lowest trivialities to support his critique but his comic inventions often astonishing earned him praise. Pursued for his books he took refuge in Holland then was imprisoned in Mainz in 1767 to end his days at 74 in a convent. 'This book is a lively and rather ribald critique of the principal stories of the Bible. L'epouse de Suze is a critique of La nouvelle Heloïse. Le sage Pangloss is Solomon the wisest of men it is an original chapter even through its singular biblical citations. L'histoire de Suzon is that of Susanna and the two elders l'histoire de Godemiché. The origin of these instruments of chamois or velvet that became so common in convents. Finally les Couvens de Jésuites is an allegory of the history of Sodom. In a word the entire volume is rather a facetious critique of the Bible and clerical institutions than a simply ribald book'. Gay/Lemonnyer I 263-264.

Piazza Paris Janvier 1898 32 x 22 cm une feuille et une serpente Rare original lithograph executed by Paul Albert Laurens for L'Estampe Moderne series number 9 published in January 1898. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins wove paper mounted on Japan paper artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on verso; engraving preceded by a tissue guard inscribed with the artist's name title and a poem; blank tissue guard. Lithograph inspired by the poem Les trophées by José-Maria de Heredia reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work of art in its own right. Its ink absorption quality and affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on par with the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy in the Art Nouveau style. Durling n° 1307. USTC n° 30460, 62908 et 6814992. Couverture rigide
