176830081à Rome Rome Paris: Aux dépens de la Congrégation de l'Index 1768. Fine. Aux dépens de la Congrégation de l'Index à Rome Rome Paris 1768 10 x 15.50 cm deux parties en un volume relié The first edition appeared in 1763 at the same address under the title: L'arretin ou la débauche de l'esprit en fait de bon sens. Contemporary full citron morocco binding. Smooth spine decorated. Green morocco title-label. Triple fillet frame on covers. Edges gilt. Handsome copy. Upper joint lightly rubbed. L'arretin consists of 25 essays and tales on subjects as diverse as Les nègres L'agriculture La chasteté ou le célibat Histoire de maître Pierre etc. These are all violent critiques sometimes direct sometimes satirical or allegorical of Biblical teaching the church and its history. Abbé Du Laurens 1719-1793 was a polemical and anti-religious writer whose works are all libertine and licentious but above all profoundly anti-religious. The author did not hesitate to descend to the lowest trivialities to support his critique but his comic inventions often astonishing earned him praise. Pursued for his books he took refuge in Holland then was imprisoned in Mainz in 1767 to end his days at 74 in a convent. 'This book is a lively and rather ribald critique of the principal stories of the Bible. L'epouse de Suze is a critique of La nouvelle Heloïse. Le sage Pangloss is Solomon the wisest of men it is an original chapter even through its singular biblical citations. L'histoire de Suzon is that of Susanna and the two elders l'histoire de Godemiché. The origin of these instruments of chamois or velvet that became so common in convents. Finally les Couvens de Jésuites is an allegory of the history of Sodom. In a word the entire volume is rather a facetious critique of the Bible and clerical institutions than a simply ribald book'. "Turning his back on both Voltarian satire and scepticism the novelist proposes a moralistic fable - the focal point of which is a rehabilitation of Leibniz's Theory of Optimism. The main body of the novel tells the story of Candide and his new wife the noble Zénoïde in their sumptuous Copenhagen townhouse. Before achieving this happy state however the couple endures various trials and tribulations reminiscent of the newly minted gothic genre. "Candide au Dannemarc" also features a satirical portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau." Éduard M. Langille from the introduction to the new edition of "Candide au Dannemarc" edited by him. Voltaire's "Candide" had inspired a sequel that appeared in 1760 which is attributed to Charles-Claude-Florent de Campigneulles but which might be by Henri-Joseph du Laurens. The present work is a direct continuation of that sequel although it ignores the happy ending of the previous work but evidently from the preface it is not written by the same author. It has still not been determined who the actual author is.The part on Rousseau pp. 148-167 in the present work has become quite famous portraying him satirically as trying to make a living in Copenhagen from copying music while plotting to escape to America. The novel ends with Candide leaving Denmark to be the Danish ambassador in Russia.A secoond edition appeared in 1769. </em> paperback

1780J1NGK9D42C5GAmsterdam 1780. 8vo. Johannes Allart Laurens Brandligt Contemporary gold-tooled mottled calf with a red morocco title label on the spine lettered in gold. With 4 folding engraved maps and 1 folding engraved plate. XIII 1 194 pp. First and only edition of a work on navigation around the Dutch island Texel and improving the harbour of Den Helder written by the sea merchant Laurens Brandligt ca. 1730-ca.1800. Due to alluviation the stream velocity in the waters around Texel had decreased. Brandligt suggests several ways to improve the navigability of these waters which was important since Dutch warships often took refuge in them. He also promoted Den Helder as a new harbour for both merchant- and war ships stressing the poor accessibility of Amsterdam. However since the harbour of Den Helder was too shallow at the time he proposed to build a dam. This dam would reverse the current pushing the sand at the bottom of the river back to sea to deepen the harbour. Brandligt worked on the plan which he named Scylla and Charybdis for 10 years. The dam was approved in 1781 and built in 1782. It remained in use until 1954 and played a pivotal role in turning Den Helder into a thriving harbour town. The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed the front joint is partly weakened with some loss of material at the head of the spine. A small restored tear in the first free end paper the title page is slightly browned. Otherwise in good condition.l Bierens de Haan 558; Kemper 1566; STCN 160106095. hardcover
