Shows streets notable buildings parks railroads and ferry and steamboat routes. The map is in good condition. <br><br>Samuel Augustus Mitchell Sr. 1792-1868 was one of the leaders in American cartography of the 19th century and pioneered the conversion of engraved map plates to more affordable lithographic plates. 188034093Racine Virginia City 1880. Broadside 8.5" x 11". Brilliant illustration of the Mitchell Wagon in red and green colors at the head of the broadside. The name and address of the Buford Company of Virginia City Montana Agents for the Mitchell Wagon are in red type. Printed with different typesettings. The broadside lists nine reasons for buying the Mitchell wagon. Fine. <br/><br/> This rare attractive broadside was likely printed in the late 1880s or early 1890s. An advertisement by Mitchell & Lewis Co. for a similar model wagon with some similar wording is found in the Handbook of Agriculture Volume 6 by Wisconsin Farmer Institutes 1892 page 277. Henry Mitchell a native of Scotland served several years as an apprentice then immigrated to America. Settling near Chicago he became the first wagon manufacturer in the Northwest. In 1864 his son-in-law William T. Lewis joined him in the business; its name changed to Mitchell & Lewis Co. The business became one of the largest in the country. S.R. Buford a leading Virginia City citizen and businessman owned a dry goods store.<br/> One of the stated reasons for the Mitchell Wagon's pre-eminence is that "Henry Mitchell the oldest practical wagon manufacturer in the country superintends the construction of the Wagon and with his fifty-five years' experience a perfect wagon is guaranteed.<br/>OCLC 883858250 1- Newberry as of August 2017. unknown books
