Nella seconda parte, si discute su genealogia storica e aporie contemporanee dei visual studies, e del ruolo che Mitchell, Moxey, Elkins, Boehm, Belting, Sachs-Hombach e altri teorici e storici dell'arte e della cultura hanno avuto nella fama accademica mondiale dei visual studies e della Bildwissenschaft. La terza parte è dedicata a un problema fondamentale della cultura visuale che è appunto il complesso rapporto tra immagine e testo. Vengono presentate le basi del concetto di iconologia letteraria di Mitchell e infine si propone un'interpretazione originale di due scrittori italiani, Niccolò Ammaniti e Alessandro Baricco, nella chiave iconologico-culturale.
